Summary:
EPIC Insurance Brokers & Consultants is seeking an attorney with experience in contracts, insurance, or construction to serve as a Construction Claims Attorney on our team of Property & Casualty insurance brokers in Birmingham, Alabama. Position Overview:
In your role as a Construction Claims Attorney, you will use your legal background to assist our specialty construction contractor clients on all claims issues. The primary objective of the role is to affect the outcome of claims in a positive manner and to reduce the cost of risk through continuous management of claims.
LOCATION: Hybrid - Birmingham, AL (3 days a week in-office)
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
- REQUIRED: Licensed attorney with at least 3+ years of relevant experience.
- Experience working with construction contractors or litigating claims for construction contractors is nice to have but not required.
- Candidates with strong, professional communication skills - both written and verbal - to interact with all levels of the internal organization, as well as external clients.
- Strong time management skills and self-starter, someone who understands what needs to be done and proactively takes it on.
- Eagerness and hunger to learn and grow.
- Positive and outgoing disposition, great team player.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
A detailed list of job duties includes (but is not limited to):
- Manage all phases and aspects of a claim: evaluate applicable coverage; prepare loss notice and report claim to carrier; document claim information and key services and activities; regularly follow-up with adjusters/TPAs to insure claim is progressing; and keep client and producer updated on claim status, with focus on efficient and economical claim closure
- Provide technical expertise in response to inquiries from clients, adjusters, TPAs, producers, defense counsel, and claimants
- Establish, maintain, and review claim files as needed in accordance with service commitments
- Monitor treatment protocols, explore return-to-work opportunities, and advise on settlement discussions
- Assist with client needs-assessments to establish reporting procedures and service commitments
- Schedule and participate in-person or telephonically in formal claims reviews, stewardships, and client and potential client presentations
- Interface with other departments to ensure effective communication and operation; work as a team within the timeline needed and production capabilities
- Identify trends in claims and work with clients and team-members to develop strategies for reducing or mitigating claims
- Maintain current knowledge of insurance contracts and industry trends; attend seminars, workshops, and training programs, as necessary and appropriate
- Interact with others in a professional, supportive, and productive manner
- Conduct all business in accordance with established policies and procedures
- Other duties as assigned
- Take proactive role in client advocacy in all aspects of claims

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:
Education, Experience, Licenses/Certifications:
- Juris Doctorate degree from ABA-approved program.
- At least 3 years of experience in contracts management, insurance coverage, construction, commercial claims adjusting, and/or other comparable legal experience within a law firm or in-house legal department.
- May be required to obtain Property & Casualty agent/producer license or other professional insurance designations.
- Obtain IRMI Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) designation within one year of hire.
Required Competencies, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to effectively build relationships with clients, carriers, and peers; position requires teamwork, poise, tact, and diplomacy
- Working knowledge in areas of investigation, reserving, and coverage analysis
- Ability to negotiate with the adjusters to positively impact the outcome of a claim
- Excellent time management, organizational, and multi-tasking skills, with high attention to detail
- Work in fast-paced environment while managing multiple competing tasks and demands
- Ability to work both independently and in cross-functional teams
- Strong written and verbal communication, presentation, and public speaking skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations with sound judgment
- May be required to work extra hours with no restrictions
COMPENSATION:
The base pay offered will be determined based on your experience, skills, training, certifications and education, while also considering internal equity and market data.
