Eaton's CTO Corporate Technology Office division is currently seeking a Thermal Research Engineer Intern.

The hourly rate for this position is 37.50/hour per hour.

What you'll do:

Job Summary role?
Eaton's Research Labs (ERL) has an exciting Engineering Intern position in the Power Conversion group to support research and technology development in emerging technology programs. The job function includes developing and testing innovative power electronics and power conversion system cooling and packaging solutions. The individual will also support the ongoing modeling, simulation, and prototype development and testing. A key role will be to support presenting ideas and projects to Eaton business leaders and leadership. Ability to identify, analyze, develop and validate advanced technologies in the field of cooling of Power Conversion and Power Electronics is necessary. Communicate complicated technologies in a clear and concise way to a variety of different audiences. A good blend of technical knowledge and is required to be successful in this position. The successful candidate will be reporting to the Technology Manager. This position is in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.

Job Responsibilities

  • As a technical intern, work with electrical and mechanical engineers on the power conversion system designs, support emerging power conversion & power system solutions based on breakthrough cooling technologies for industrial, automotive, truck, and aerospace applications.
  • Participate in technology projects by supporting teams (local and remote resources) and working with external technology resources (Business Divisions, Universities and Customers).
  • Support advancement of state of the art in the area of power electronics and power conversion system cooling and packaging solutions, including single and 2-phase cooling, micro-channel liquid cooling, hybrid cooling, advanced materials for thermal management etc. as well as supporting the identification of commercialization opportunities with diverse Eaton businesses.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural globally distributed teams, support specific task within the scope of work and provide updates to project manager.
  • Support global technology programs utilizing Eaton's technology development processes including Business Reviews, and Project Reviews.
  • Support project plans and deliver results on budget and schedule.
  • Support projects with partners from national labs, universities, and other research institutes.

Qualifications:

Education level required

  • Graduate student (prefer PhD student) in Mechanical Engineering with special focus in advanced cooling technologies

Years and area of experience required

  • 1 years of experience

Technical knowledge

  • Fundamentals in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics applicable to power electronics, electromagnetics, power conversion and electric drives, including creating specifications, designing technical solution concepts, and building and testing prototypes to validate models/hypotheses and documenting results.
  • Experience in modeling & simulation of thermal-fluid using thermal networks, FEA, &CFD analysis tools such as Icepak, Fluent, Ansys, Comsol etc.
  • Experience in all modes of heat transfer (convection, conduction, radiation, phase change) in electric systems, and a good understanding of modeling and testing on 2 phase cooling and advance materials is a plus.
  • 3D CAD modeling software knowledge (Creo, Inventor, Spaceclaim, Soldworks)
  • Experience in testing or designing liquid cooling solution for power electronics, immersion cooling, material compatiblitity, BOM, family selection of heat exchangers, pumps, fluid connections, fans, heat sinks
  • Appreciation for the trade-offs necessary to achieve designs that meet performance requirements and cost objective solutions.
