Grid Intelligence Intern - Real-time Simulations

CO Salary Range: USD 35.00 - 40.00 per hour

Eaton's Research Lab (ERL) has an exciting and rewarding position as an Intern on Energy Systems to support research and technology development in power grid intelligence programs. This position will be based at our Golden, Colorado office, and the internship period is May to August, 2026.

The hourly rate for this position is $35-$40 per hour per hour.

What you'll do:

As a key contributor to ground-breaking research at Eaton Research Labs you will be performing research and development into cutting edge power grid technologies with identification of market opportunities, implementation and demonstration in a realistic utility or critical facility environments. The successful candidate will be challenged with engaging in research programs on grid automation, cyber security and resiliency, power systems control, stability, and fault management.

The candidate will support real-time testbed development and demonstration of advanced protection and control algorithms for critical infrastructure with grid security and support functions.

In this role you will:
• Assist with implementation and evaluation of advanced protection and control algorithms addressing fault management, resilient and secure operation of critical infrastructure power systems utilizing both offline and real-time simulation platforms.
• Support real-time control and protection testbed development, including software in the loop and hardware in the loop environments
• Contribute to development and validation of high-fidelity power system models with real time simulation platforms

Qualifications:

• PhD Student from an accredited institution or MS student with 3+ years of Industrial or Entrepreneurial experience
• Must be able to work in the United States without corporate sponsorship now and within the future

• Currently located within 50-mile radius of Golden, CO
• In-depth knowledge of power system principles and their practical applications.
• Proficiency in real-time environments such as RTDS. Ability to interface real-time environments with industry-standard controllers to demonstrate advanced protection concepts.
• Proficiency in power system modeling and simulation tools such as PSCAD and RSCAD.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C, and C++.
• Knowledge and understanding of IEC 61850 concepts and ability to translate that to virtual environments.
