Skilled Technician - Level II

Job Summary

The Skilled Technician - Level II performs skilled technical activities that support manufacturing business needs. This role is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and improving electrical, automation, robotics, and industrial control systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient manufacturing operations. The technician works with limited supervision while applying Cummins Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) standards, quality procedures, and continuous improvement practices.

Key Responsibilities Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Perform preventive, predictive, corrective, breakdown, and emergency maintenance activities to maximize equipment uptime and operational reliability.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain electrical systems, PLCs, control panels, industrial drives, motion systems, automation equipment, and electronic systems.
  • Diagnose faults in relay logic, contactor circuits, electrical wiring, machine controls, and industrial automation systems.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, control diagrams, machine drawings, operation manuals, and technical specifications.
  • Repair and maintain production, assembly, and testing equipment in accordance with defined procedures and standards.

Automation, Robotics & System Integration

  • Maintain and troubleshoot Siemens S7-1500 PLC-based automation systems using Siemens TIA Portal.
  • Perform PLC programming, modifications, upgrades, and system improvements to optimize manufacturing performance.
  • Support operation and troubleshooting of industrial robots including ABB, Yaskawa, FANUC Robots, FANUC Cobots, and Universal Robots Cobots.
  • Work with industrial motion and drive systems such as Siemens and Festo technologies.
  • Maintain machine communication and connectivity using industrial protocols including PROFINET, OPC UA, and TCP/IP.
  • Support integration of manufacturing systems, process data, CMES, and machine vision inspection systems.

Tools, Equipment & Asset Care

  • Maintain and troubleshoot assembly and testing tools such as Atlas Copco nut runners and Tohnichi torque tools.
  • Perform routine inspections, testing, and calibration checks to ensure proper equipment functionality.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment including routine housekeeping and machine cleaning activities.
  • Support spare parts planning and inventory management for automation, robotics, and electrical components.

Analysis & Continuous Improvement

  • Analyze equipment breakdowns and conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to prevent recurrence.
  • Identify manufacturing constraints and support process optimization and equipment improvement initiatives.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations into Preventive Maintenance (PM) systems.
  • Participate actively in Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and continuous improvement activities.
  • Support process improvements focused on safety, quality, productivity, and reliability.

Health, Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Stop work and immediately report unsafe conditions, hazards, incidents, or near misses.
  • Follow Cummins Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) policies, Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) procedures, and electrical safety standards.
  • Conduct Job Safety Assessments (JSA) and apply safe work practices in all activities.
  • Perform work according to quality standards, process documentation, and workmanship expectations.
  • Perform quality inspections and escalate issues to minimize quality, safety, and cost risks.
  • Recognize environmental impacts of work activities and support sustainability initiatives.

  • Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and internal support teams for issue resolution and project execution.

Qualifications

Skills and Experience

Technical Skills

  • Electrical system troubleshooting and industrial fault diagnosis.
  • PLC programming, automation system maintenance, and industrial controls expertise.
  • Experience with Siemens TIA Portal and Siemens S7-1500 PLC systems.
  • Knowledge of robotics systems including ABB, FANUC, Yaskawa, and Universal Robots.

  • Compliance with export control or sanctions regulations may be required for this position.

Experience

  • Requires relevant work experience or intermediate-to-advanced technical knowledge obtained through education, specialized training, or hands-on industrial experience.
  • Prior experience in manufacturing, industrial maintenance, automation, robotics, or electrical systems environments is strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting high-volume manufacturing operations and automation systems is an added advantage.
