Job Summary
The Product Design Technician - Level I is an entry-level role designed to support development through a formal apprenticeship or regional training program. The position focuses on building foundational skills in product design, CAD modeling, and engineering standards while contributing to team deliverables. The role involves assisting experienced technicians and independently supporting assigned tasks during cross-functional rotations.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the creation and maintenance of 3D models and engineering drawings under guidance.
- Develop capability to ensure model and drawing quality in line with Cummins standards.
- Learn and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) in product specifications.
- Utilize CAD and data management tools for configuration control and data security.
- Gain knowledge of company, industry, national, and international engineering standards.
- Assist in processing internal engineering work requests.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams as required.
- Participate in training programs, coursework, and apprenticeship activities to build technical expertise.
- Contribute to assigned tasks independently during team rotations.

Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent in a relevant STEM field is required.
- Must meet eligibility requirements to enroll in a formal apprenticeship or training program.
- Registration in a regionally certified apprenticeship or training program is required.
- May require compliance with export control or regulatory licensing depending on region.
Experience
- Minimal or no prior work experience required.
- Internship, academic projects, or hands-on exposure to CAD/design tools preferred.
Skills
- Basic knowledge of CAD tools (preferred: Creo / ProE for 2D & 3D modeling).
- Familiarity with GD&T concepts (hands-on exposure is a plus).
- Understanding of engineering drawings and drafting fundamentals.
- Awareness of PLM/PDM tools (preferred: Windchill).
- Basic understanding of product configuration and change management processes.
- Knowledge of sheet metal design concepts is an advantage.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to multitask and work within tight timelines.
- Strong learning agility and attention to detail.
Additional Requirements for Internal Candidates
- Working knowledge of Creo (latest version) for 2D & 3D modeling and drafting.
- Hands-on experience with GD&T and engineering documentation.
- Familiarity with PLM tools (Windchill) and product change management processes.
- Understanding of systems engineering processes.
- Knowledge of sheet metal parts, assemblies, and design concepts.
- Exposure to on-road/off-road equipment or genset products is an advantage.
- Ability to manage technical documentation for productivity and knowledge transfer.
- Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
- Ability to work under stringent timelines and manage multiple priorities.
- Demonstrated learning agility and proactive approach to skill development.
