We are looking for an enthusiastic On Highway Customer Engineering Placement Student to join our Customer Engineering Team at Cummins Inc., in Darlington UK. During your placement with us, you will learn how a major global organization operates, gaining the tools and exposure you will need to become an expert in the industry and power your potential!

This role is available to candidates who qualify for a placement year and will commence in Summer 2026.

RESPONSIBILITIES

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Be an integral part of the European Customer Engineering Team; this team provides all aspects of the technical interface to our commercial vehicle and industrial machine manufacturer customers in Europe.
  • Provide Engineering project management support for the application of existing powertrain products, or for development of new technology applications
  • Provide Engineering analysis in support of new product application projects - typically focused on powertrain optimisation, using simulation methods where appropriate.
  • Supporting in-field application testing
  • Lead small projects or sections of larger projects under guidance from experienced engineers and functional experts.
  • Obtain technical information from customers, such as product requirements, and convey this 'voice of customer' into the new product development teams

QUALIFICATIONS

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Strong aptitude for the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) combined with the ability to communicate on technical matters clearly and efficiently - across different business functions with internal and external stakeholders. Preference for Mechanical Engineering and Automotive Engineering students.
  • A curiosity for how things work and an aptitude for technical problem solving; you may have a general interest in propulsion or powertrain systems via a hobby or prior work experience.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications - Excel, PowerPoint, Teams. Desirable: experience using Matlab for engineering problem analysis, or a keen interest in developing your Matlab skills.
  • Strong communication skills when interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
