Electronic Systems Technical Specialist - Software

Job Summary

This applied technology role is responsible for developing embedded software that is integral to Cummins' products. The position involves understanding stakeholder requirements, defining software specifications, and leading the design, implementation, integration, and validation of AUTOSAR-based software systems across various customer applications.

As a technical specialist, the role drives high-quality software development, ensures robust system integration, and contributes to the advancement of software processes, tools, and methodologies across the product lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and integrate embedded software using Embedded C for microcontroller-based systems.
  • Work extensively on AUTOSAR architecture, including configuration, integration, and deployment.
  • Utilize Vector DaVinci Developer and Configurator for software development and system configuration.
  • Develop and execute CAPL scripts and use CANalyzer for network simulation and analysis.
  • Investigate software issues, perform root cause analysis, and drive resolution with proper documentation.
  • Collaborate with product, systems, and software teams to deliver validated software features and components.
  • Apply and improve software development processes including coding, compilation, integration, and testing.
  • Use tools such as static analysis tools, compilers, debuggers (e.g., Lauterbach Trace32), and HIL systems.
  • Make technical decisions related to software requirements, architecture, design, and validation.
  • Support product verification and validation activities, ensuring quality and performance standards are met.
  • Review work of junior engineers to ensure robust, reusable, and efficient software design.
  • Lead or contribute to small projects or complex modules, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams and support knowledge sharing and mentoring activities.
  • Drive continuous improvement in software processes, tools, and system integration practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a relevant STEM field is required.
  • Master's degree in a related discipline is preferred.
  • May require compliance with export control regulations.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong expertise in Embedded C programming for microcontroller-based systems.
  • Hands-on experience with AUTOSAR architecture, configuration, and integration.
  • Proficiency in Vector DaVinci Developer and Configurator toolchain.
  • Experience with CAPL scripting and CANalyzer.
  • Strong knowledge of automotive communication protocols: CAN, LIN, J1939, J1979, UDS, XCP.
  • Expertise in debugging using tools such as Lauterbach Trace32.
  • Understanding of V-cycle software development lifecycle.
  • Familiarity with integration tools, static analysis tools, compilers, and HIL testing environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with structured methodologies.
  • Ability to manage complexity and make sound technical decisions.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills across cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers and influence technical direction.
  • Resourcefulness in optimizing processes, tools, and delivery outcomes.

Experience

  • Prior experience equivalent to a Senior or Lead Engineer in embedded software development.
  • Proven track record of technical problem-solving, system integration, and quality decision-making.
  • Hands-on experience in AUTOSAR-based development and embedded systems projects.
  • Experience working across full software development lifecycle (V-cycle).
  • Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred.
