Position Overview

The Traffic Control Supervisor is responsible for coordinating and supervising traffic control operations on construction and roadway projects. This position oversees work zone setup, traffic control personnel, and compliance with traffic control plans to ensure the safety of employees, motorists, pedestrians, and the public. Serves as the primary field resource for maintaining safe and efficient traffic flow through construction zones while ensuring compliance with company and local regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

Traffic Control Operations

  • Coordinate and maintain traffic control activities in assigned work zones.
  • Interpret and implement approved traffic control plans and project specifications.
  • Oversee the placement, movement, maintenance, and removal of traffic control devices, including signs, barricades, cones, drums, message boards, and arrow boards.
  • Monitor work zones to ensure proper traffic flow and compliance with safety standards.

Leadership and Supervision
  • Direct and coordinate flaggers and traffic control personnel to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Provide guidance, training, and coaching regarding traffic control procedures, safety requirements, and work zone operations.
  • Communicate daily assignments, expectations, and schedule changes to traffic control crews.
  • Partner with project foremen, superintendents, and operations personnel to support project goals.


Safety and Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with company safety policies, OSHA, MSHA and UDOT requirements.
  • Conduct routine inspections of work zones and traffic control devices.
  • Identify, report, and correct unsafe conditions or hazards.
  • Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by all crew members.


Communication and Incident Management
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for traffic control concerns at assigned projects.
  • Coordinate with law enforcement, emergency responders, and public agencies as necessary.
  • Investigate and document traffic-related incidents and recommend corrective actions.
  • Communicate professionally with the public, customers, and project stakeholders.


Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous traffic control, roadway construction, paving, or utility construction experience preferred.
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) certification and Flagger certification preferred or required based on project and state requirements.
  • Thorough knowledge of MUTCD standards and temporary traffic control practices.


Certifications

• Standard Driver's License is required.

• Valid Certified Traffic Control Card a plus

• A medical card is required

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands to handle or feel. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above their shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move from 10 to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is rarely exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions; and extreme cold and/or heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
