Position Overview
The Sweeping Machine Operator/Driver is responsible for maintaining clean, safe, and efficient paved surfaces by removing debris, dust, and loose material from roads, parking lots, and other paved areas. This role is essential in both construction and maintenance operations, ensuring surfaces meet safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
- Properly follow all company policies and procedures for safe working procedures and environment. Report any problems to the Foreperson, Safety Manager, or Human Resources Manager.
- Perform daily pre/post trip inspections with appropriate documentation in compliance with DOT guidelines
- Obey applicable laws and follow dispatch instructions for schedule
- Maintain daily vehicle mileage logs if required
- Monitor and adjust the sweeper's settings to ensure effective cleaning without damaging the pavement
- Work with other crew members, dump trucks, and paving equipment to maintain a smooth workflow
- Pre-shift and Post Shift inspection of the sweeper for damage or wear, perform routine maintenance, and report malfunctions to supervisors
- Use hand or audio signals to coordinate with the team, especially when aligning with dump trucks or other machinery
- Assist in setting up and dismantling equipment before and after operations
- Document daily production, material usage, and any issues encountered
- Must keep vehicle in clean and orderly condition. Job requires cleaning and washing of vehicle
Qualifications and Required Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Education/Experience
- High school education or GED preferred but not required
- Class B (minimum requirement) Commercial Drivers License with a good driving record
- Proficiency in operating paving and surface equipment, including sweepers, rollers, and brooms
- Have a clear understanding of paving processes, material properties and machine controls
Work Requirements
- Must be 18 years or older
- Must pass DOT physical, drug screen and criminal background check
- Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and general public at all times
- Ability to be flexible with schedule changes, location changes, time of shift changes. Overtime work required.
- Must be willing to work nights, weekends and out of town/county or state when necessary.
- Must report to the assigned job site and be ready to begin work at the designated start time
- Attendance required according to company attendance policy to ensure crew operates at normal efficiency level
- Strict adherence to Company safety requirements and procedures
- Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as being able to work independently with attention to detail
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Job requires climbing, stooping, bending, squatting, lifting, stretching, sitting/driving and shifting gears and pulling
- Ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk and hear
- May require sitting for extended periods of time
- Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance peripheral, depth, and the ability to focus
- Required regular lifting of 25 to 50 lbs
Work Environment
- The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions
- The noise level in some areas of the work environment may be loud, but is typically moderate
- Must be able to adapt and work in all weather conditions
- Exposure to dust, noise, vibration and heavy equipment.
