Position Overview

The Estimator position is responsible for using a combination of past experiences and project specifications to accurately estimate the amount of materials, equipment, and/or man hours that must be utilized to complete a given project. Based upon these calculations, they create a project budget that is then presented to Management. All necessary details must meet not only legal, but also company policies and guidelines.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Perform concrete, aggregate and asphalt and related material takeoffs (mix specifications and rough quantities) from plans and specifications at customers' locations or from on-line internet services.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings to take notes and relay information to appropriate departments and personnel.
  • Identify concrete, aggregates, and related materials within the specifications of identified projects.
  • Address customer inquiries or concerns related to products and services. May be responsible for contacting the customer directly for clarification on quotes, resolving issues, change orders or other topics.
  • Possess or develop the knowledge of basic concrete, aggregate and asphalt technologies.
  • Prepare verbal and/or written quotations of concrete and related materials for bidding purposes; commercial projects, annual customer requirements, state, county and municipal requirements. Help prepare estimates, proposals and sealed bids for asphalt construction projects.
  • Input quotes and other information into computer systems based on information gathered by estimators and the sales team.
  • Track the projects quoted, help maintain schedules and follow-up on the project or sale of materials.
  • Prepare project price information for the sale of the products quoted and/or required.
  • Research various construction projects in our markets by utilizing the internet, professional organizations, periodicals and other forums to generate new leads.
  • Assist and provide Quality Control Manager with required information for the proper preparation of concrete and material certifications for specific projects.
  • Any other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education/Experience
  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering or comparable discipline preferred.
  • ACI Grade 1 Concrete Field-Testing Technician Certification on equivalent preferred.
  • Experience in a building materials/construction industry preferred.


Work Requirements
  • Must be 18 years in age or older.
  • Must pass pre- employment drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Regular, on-time and consistent attendance is required and must be willing to work evenings and weekends when necessary.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required (less than 10% of the time).


Knowledge/Skill Requirements
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft suite of tools including Excel, Word and Outlook, and database software. Must be able to utilize internet and communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment, assisting co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Must display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Must display a willingness and ability to work in and adapt to changes in circumstances, tasks, customer needs and other conditions that may affect their daily responsibilities.
  • Proven ability to develop relationships and to work with teams as both a leader and a participant. Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must have strong problem solving and leadership skills.
  • Strong negotiation skills and ability to work with suppliers.
  • Demonstrate excellent attention to detail and ability to recognize discrepancies.

  • Must maintain and continuously develop knowledge of the building materials and construction industry.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Regularly required to sit and use hands and fingers to manipulate/handle objects.
  • Frequently required to reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel or crouch, lift and/or move up to 10 lbs.
  • Able to communicate with others by telephone and in person.
  • Able to utilize office equipment including a computer for word processing, email communication, and preparation of documents and presentations.


Work Environment

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. A variety of noise levels, adverse weather conditions, and complex job sites are to be expected daily. Proper clothing, PPE (personal protective equipment), and safety precautions should be taken to ensure your safety, and the safety of others in all conditions. While performing non-field duties of this position, the environment is typical of an office setting and the noise level is usually quiet to moderate.
