The Portable Operations Manager, is responsible for leading the daily operations of portable concrete plant sites. This role oversees production, quality control, material management, equipment performance, and customer service to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective concrete production. The Area Manager also provides leadership to plant personnel and supports successful project execution across assigned locations.
Core Responsibilities
- Safety and Compliance: Promote a strong safety culture by ensuring the well-being of employees and contractors, implementing vehicle traffic plans, conducting site-specific training, identifying job hazards, and enforcing OSHA and environmental compliance requirements.
- Production Management: Oversee daily concrete batching, mixing, and scheduling to meet customer demand, production targets, and project timelines.
- Quality Control: Monitor material moisture, slump, air content, and mix consistency to ensure all products meet quality standards and project specifications.
- Logistics and Dispatch Coordination: Collaborate with dispatchers, aggregate suppliers, and commercial drivers to support efficient operations and on-time delivery to project sites.
- Equipment Maintenance: Coordinate preventive maintenance and emergency repairs for batch systems, conveyors, and other plant equipment to maximize reliability and minimize downtime.
- Inventory Control: Manage cement, aggregate, sand, and admixture inventory levels to maintain adequate supply while minimizing waste and controlling costs.
- Team Leadership: Recruit, train, supervise, and develop batch plant operators, mixer drivers, yard personnel, and technicians to support safe and productive operations.
Working Conditions
- Environment: Work is performed between a local production office and active outdoor industrial job sites.
- Exposure: Regular exposure to extreme weather, dust, noise, and industrial materials may be required.
- Schedule: This position may require extended hours, including early mornings, evenings, and Saturdays, based on project demands.
- Travel: Overnight travel may range from 20% to 80%, depending on project location and scheduling needs.

Qualifications and Requirements
Professional Experience
- Industry Experience: Minimum of 3 to 5 years of hands-on experience in concrete plant operations, construction materials, or heavy industrial manufacturing.
- Leadership Experience: At least 2 years of supervisory experience leading field personnel, equipment operators, or commercial drivers.
Education and Certifications
- Education: A bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or Business Administration is strongly preferred. Equivalent combinations of relevant industry experience and formal education will also be considered.
- Technical Certifications: Certifications from the American Concrete Institute (ACI), such as ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician, and certifications from the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) are strongly preferred.
- Licensing: A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is required.
Hard and Soft Skills
- Mechanical Aptitude: Working knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems to troubleshoot equipment issues and support plant reliability.
- Software Proficiency: Experience using concrete batching software such as Command Alkon, as well as inventory tracking and dispatch systems.
- Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to address logistical challenges, production inconsistencies, and equipment failures in a fast-paced environment.
- Communication: Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with employees, contractors, engineers, and other project stakeholders.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to climb stairs and ladders, stand for extended periods, and occasionally lift up to 50 to 100 pounds.
