Position Overview

This is an apprenticeship position, and the paving laborer apprenticeship is responsible for safely performing a variety of construction duties to assist the highway, utility, grade crews or at various on-site plant locations. This position involves various manual tasks. Work will be performed per the supervisor's instruction, free from direct supervision except for more complicated jobs.

Wage Range: $21 - $24 per hour

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

• Assist crew members with a wide variety of construction tasks, including asphalt shoveling and raking.
• Learn and follow safe work practices, including proper use of tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment.
• Support pavement installation by helping with asphalt removal and placement.
• Perform general site labor such as shoveling, raking, sweeping, compacting, and debris cleanup.
• Help with construction activities and assisting asphalt crews where needed.
• Load, unload, and stage construction materials, tools, and equipment as directed.
• Learn to identify and avoid underground utilities and hazards while supporting excavation tasks.
• Support equipment operators by spotting, signaling, and maintaining safe distances around heavy machinery.
• Follow instructions and work closely with crew members, foremen, and operators to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area on active job sites.
• Perform other related duties as assigned to support field operations and build trade skills.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience

• High School diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred but not required.
• No prior construction experience required - training provided.
• Previous labor experience in construction, landscaping, or related work is helpful but not required.

Work Requirements

• General construction knowledge.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Must pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
• Ability to work well with others in a group or one on one setting.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
