Position Overview

The Lead Driver is responsible for permitting, coordination of equipment mobilization as well as operating a truck and trailer for transportation of construction material and equipment. In this position, the Driver will load construction equipment (may include but are not limited to: front end loader, crusher equipment, paving equipment, fuel tanks, dozer, excavator, oversized loads) onto trailer and transport to various construction sites.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Operates truck in safe and professional manner on public highways, roads, in the yard area and at various job sites to deliver equipment and materials.
  • Obtain required permits for equipment mobilization, including annual and one-time trip permits.
  • Dispatching and coordinating equipment mobilization moves.
  • Performs daily pre/post trip inspections with appropriate documentation in compliance with DOT guidelines. Checks fluid levels, tires, lights, and other controls for safe operation as well as monitoring gauges during operation of vehicle.
  • Keep truck in clean and working order, including basic maintenance. This includes cleaning after loads or jobs as required.
  • Accurate logging of deliveries required for billing as well as maintain daily vehicle logs.
  • Attaches and removes lowboy trailers, belly dump & side dump trailers, and mobile plant equipment to truck as needed.
  • Load and unload equipment or materials.
  • Perform minor servicing and maintenance of equipment; refer major problems to the supervisor.
  • Properly follow all company policies and procedures for safe working procedures and environment. Comply with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations. Report any problems to the Foreman, Superintendent, Safety Manager, or Human Resources.
  • Comply with all Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements including but not limited to vehicle weight, licensing, vehicle inspection and hours of service.
  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education/Experience
  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Three to five years of related tractor-trailer driving experience preferred.


Work Requirements
  • Must be 21 years in age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Must possess and maintain a Class A CDL with air brakes endorsement for manual transmission vehicles and meet the company MVR requirements. Hazmat materials and tanker endorsements are required within the first 30 days of employment.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Regular, on-time and consistent attendance is required and must be willing to work nights, weekends, holidays and work away from home when required.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA.


Knowledge/Skill Requirements
  • Ability to operate Class A Truck with Lowboy Trailer and various other types of heavy equipment that may include but not limited to Loader/Backhoe, Grader, Excavator, Crushing Equipment, Haul Truck and Asphalt Paving Equipment.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently under a variety of working conditions.
  • Ability to read and comprehend policies, instructions, site maps, city street maps and other GPS based equipment information.
  • Ability to do basic mathematical calculations to keep time and material records.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as being able to work independently with attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate, understand and follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Must be familiar with securing heavy equipment and other over-dimensional loads.
  • Ability to cope well in stressful environments and communicate professionally.
  • Demonstrated ability to take guidance and direction from a supervisor.

  • Able to communicate with others by email, telephone and in-person. Able to utilize a computer, phone or tablet for typing, message, data management, timekeeping, and communicating by voice or text.
  • Able to frequently stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and talk or hear.
  • Able to use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, lift hands and arms above shoulder level, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
  • May require sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to focus.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, inclined walkways and access elevated platforms.
  • Able to regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.


Work Environment

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. A variety of noise levels, adverse weather conditions, and complex job sites are to be expected daily.
