Position Overview

This is a skilled position involving the safe and efficient operation of various types of construction equipment such as a finish blade or motor grader operator in order to create smooth, level surfaces in construction projects, particularly for roads, highways, and other infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties & Functions)

  • Operate heavy equipment safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain safe excavation slopes and ensure proper barricading at all times.
  • Grade excavation and embankment areas to prepare for base materials and other construction layers.
  • Achieve accurate rough and finish grades across various soil types and site conditions.
  • Identify and locate utilities and other underground lines before beginning excavation work.
  • Perform minor equipment servicing and maintenance; report major mechanical issues to a supervisor.
  • Apply knowledge of trenching and shoring standards to maintain safe work areas.
  • Maintain accurate time, material, and production records.
  • Understand aggregate types, sizes, and classifications.
  • Ensure loads leaving the pit meet required weight specifications.
  • Read, interpret, and work from grade stakes, plans, and project specifications.
  • Travel between job sites, ranging from interstate highways to rural dirt roads.
  • Assist Laborers on job sites as needed.
  • Perform physical tasks related to setting grade hubs and stakes, as well as tasks associated with road construction, asphalt placement, and related activities.


Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of finish blade operating experience meeting Federal Highway Administration and Federal Aviation Administration standards.
  • Proficiency operating both Conventional machines (mechanical or hydraulic control levers with direct manual blade control) and M‑Series machines (joystick‑controlled, electronically assisted, integrated grade‑control systems).
  • Experience with Trimble GPS Earthworks systems preferred.

Language Skills
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.


Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Read and understand grade stakes / slope stakes


Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to work well with others in a group or one on one setting.

Project locations can vary from remote (Yellowstone Park) requiring a camper to live in to in Idaho Falls area.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
