Position Overview
The Road Construction Leadman is a working leader responsible for overseeing daily crew activities while actively participating in roadway construction operations. This role supports the Superintendent or Foreman by directing crew members, ensuring work is performed safely and efficiently, and maintaining job site productivity and quality standards. The Leadman serves as a key link between field crews and supervision, taking on limited supervisory duties while remaining hands-on in the field.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
Leadership & Supervision
- Lead, instruct, and coordinate assigned crew members to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to project specifications.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for crew members during daily operations.
- Assist the Superintendent/Foreman with task assignments, workflow planning, and on-the-job training.
- Monitor crew performance and provide feedback, coaching, and guidance as needed.
- Enforce company policies, procedures, and safety standards consistently.
Safety
- Promote and maintain a strong safety culture on the job site.
- Conduct daily job safety briefings ("tailgate meetings").
- Identify hazards and take corrective action immediately.
- Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe operation of tools and equipment.
- Report all incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions promptly.

Operations & Quality
- Perform roadway construction tasks, including but not limited to grading, paving, concrete work, drainage, and earthwork.
- Ensure work meets quality standards, specifications, and project timelines.
- Assist with reading and interpreting plans, blueprints, and specifications.
- Coordinate equipment, materials, and manpower to minimize downtime.
- Monitor job progress and communicate issues or delays to supervision.
Equipment & Materials
- Operate and oversee the safe operation of construction equipment as required.
- Ensure proper care, maintenance, and security of tools and equipment.
- Verify materials are used efficiently and report shortages or damage.
Communication & Documentation
- Maintain clear communication between crew members and management.
- Assist with daily reports, timekeeping, and job documentation as required.
- Communicate changes in work plans or priorities to crew members.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of road construction experience.
- Demonstrated ability to lead crews and work effectively in a team environment.
- Strong knowledge of road construction practices, equipment, and safety standards.
- Ability to work long hours, weekends, and in varied weather conditions.
- Valid driver's license (CDL preferred or willingness to obtain, if applicable).
Preferred
- Prior experience as a Leadman, Crew Leader, or acting Supervisor.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations and company safety programs.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
Work Requirements
- Must be 18 years in age or older.
- Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
- Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
- Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
- Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
- Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position is: Face Shield, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, and Coveralls.
- Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in construction and paving.
- Ability to read, write and do basic mathematical calculations.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.
Physical Requirements

- Able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear.
- Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Able to work in all weather conditions.
- The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands.
- The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hand and arms above their shoulders.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move any where up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment
- While performing the duties of the job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
- The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock or burn.
- The noise level in some areas of the work environment may be loud, but is typically moderate.
