Job Summary

The Manager, Mechanical Detection Technology Development is responsible for conceptualizing, designing, sourcing and executing new technology initiatives that drive improvements in safety, operational excellence, and business management for Mechanical. The position liaises between Mechanical, Engineering, and I&T and collaborates with internal and external business partners to develop and deliver solutions. The incumbent facilitates a common understanding between parties by eliciting requirements from Mechanical, and leads efforts to design, source and implement technology solutions that solve short-term tactical needs but can scale as part of the broader Mechanical Technology strategy. The role is responsible for curating and maintaining a robust innovation pipeline, from research to incubation and operationalization.
Main Responsibilities

Business Requirements Management, Product Design and Technology Sourcing

• Collaborate with Mechanical leadership to identify opportunities for technology solutions using data-driven methodologies
• Serve as Technical Expert in the development, sourcing, and selection process
• Direct CN I&T technical requirements and deliveries
• Lead product requirements process, including identifying appropriate stakeholders, leading requirements gathering sessions, and creating process maps
• Lead cross-functional collaboration with other projects and programs to validate business needs, understand dependencies and align deliverables
• Collaborate with cross functional team to define PoC MVPs
• Partner with CN Procurement and other internal partners (I&T, Operations, Finance as needed) to develop and launch RFIs, RFPs, and associated evaluation collateral
• Collaborate with Mechanical Detection leadership to define long term product and technology strategies

Research and Development

• Analyze impacts of new technologies and methodologies and their application to business outcomes and back-office analytics systems

• Provide business leaders with insight into innovative technologies that can disrupt and enhance business models and capabilities
• Conduct technical analysis and evaluations of advanced solutions
• Gather, evaluate, and analyze data from multiple field operations technologies
• Perform consolidation and analysis on multiple cross-functional data sources

Product Delivery and Operationalization

• Oversee Mechanical, I&T and other internal and external stakeholders to deliver projects on time and within budget
• Lead the development of project evaluation criteria; work with internal stakeholders to analyze delivery and results to determine level of success
• Analyze, clarify, prioritize, and manage requirements throughout product life cycle
• Understand solution gaps and communicate complex business issues and impacts to stakeholders

Working Conditions

The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environments, often in various weather conditions. The role has standard workweek from Monday-to-Friday but carries an expectation of being on-call 24/7 to address critical incidents. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress. The role requires occasional travel (up to 40%) within Canada and the United States (U.S.).

Requirements

Experience

• Minimum 7 years of work experience in systems technology development, product development, field operations, or equivalent technical industries
o Experience gathering and documenting business and technical requirements from multiple stakeholder groups and synthesizing into actionable items
o Experience designing inspection or detection systems
o Experience in technical project or program delivery
o Experience in providing recommendations to senior leaders with appropriate justification
o Experience with data science techniques and data analysis tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Business Objects, Systems, Applications and Products (SAP), Business Warehouse (BW)
o Experience in technology and systems integration
o Experience in railway systems
o Experience in Railroad and Engineering field operations

Education/Certification/Designation

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computing Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience

• Master's Degree in Engineering, Computing Science, Business Administration or an equivalent combination of education and work experience

Technical Skills/Knowledge

• Strong understanding of both Mechanical and I&T processes
• Comprehensive working knowledge of sensing technology solutions
• Solid understanding of electro-mechanical systems.
• Familiarity with software system architecture and development
• Knowledge of computer networking principles and cybersecurity standards.
• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Working knowledge of SAP and CN's internal systems
• Awareness of cloud-based technologies, with exposure to machine learning and artificial intelligence concepts
