Intern, Public Works Officer
This is a full-time summer internship lasting from May 11, 2026, until August 28, 2026.
Job Summary
The public works intern will support CN's efforts to promote railway safety and coordination where our right of way intersects with the public and assist with utility and construction permit reviews. You'll work with internal teams and public agencies to track projects, respond to safety concerns, support regulatory compliance, and help ensure plans submitted meet CN standards and requirements. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in civil engineering, transportation infrastructure, public safety, and project coordination.
Major Responsibilities
Assist in reviewing utility drawings and permit applications
Assist in coordination of grade crossing improvement and utility projects in collaboration with local, provincial, and federal agencies as well as private companies.
Assist in preparing documents, track project progress, and support agreement development.
Assist in maintaining records of safety notices for public and private road crossings.
Support safety audits and follow up on inspection notices from transportation authorities to ensure compliance and timely resolution.
Support communication with municipalities, transportation agencies, and internal teams.
Maintain spreadsheets and databases related to crossing inventory, inspections, and project status.
Requirements
Proficient in data and project management
Strong organization and communication skills
Ability to review engineering memos and drawings
Working knowledge of programs such as Geographic Information System (GIS), Systems Applications and Products (SAP) and Automatic Computer Aided Design (AutoCad)
Proficient in Microsoft Office Excel and SharePoint
Education
Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, Transportation Engineering/Planning, Construction Management, Business Administration with focus on Project Management, Urban Planning.
