Position Summary
The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Technician (AKA: Adult Basic Education Jr. Navigator) at CNM plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive assistance to the ABE Department. The position's responsibilities include administering and scoring standardized student assessments, facilitating student intake, advisement, and registration in compliance with the requirements of ABE federal and state-funded grants. The technician contributes insights to help develop best practices for ABE departmental operations, focusing on assisting students in obtaining their high school equivalency and/or learning English as a second language. You will assist with administrative tasks, such as maintaining student records and organizing educational materials. The technician plays a crucial role in creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment for adult learners looking to improve their basic skills.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Sets up and administers standardized assessments for Adult Basic Education (ABE) students, including High School Equivalency (HSE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) students, adhering to test publisher requirements and NRS guidelines.
  • Determine student eligibility, appropriate test level, and course placement.
  • Handle disputes regarding test results and re-testing, special accommodations, and student and/or faculty complaints.
  • Track student instructional hours in Laces database for ABE program grant testing requirements and determines progress testing levels according to test publisher guidelines.
  • Assemble, maintains inventory for faculty to test students.
  • Scores tests manually and electronically, assisting students in the computer lab with troubleshooting and resolving routine computer issues.
  • Corresponds and coordinates with faculty regarding student testing; trains faculty and staff on testing requirements and enforcement of testing policies.
  • Provide and interpret confidential test result data reports to faculty, staff, and students according to FERPA rules.
  • Greet current and prospective students, answer incoming department calls to provide information about programs, classes, and departmental operations.
  • Help develop standard operating procedures for the program.
  • Maintain filing and retention of student records observing New Mexico Higher Education regulations.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues relating to student testing software (TABE/CASAS) with vendor and CNM Student Assessment Center staff.
  • Help with internal departmental data record auditing as needed by program grant.
  • Perform security, daily backup, and restoration checks of information; create templates, spreadsheets, and other documents to support efficiency and accuracy for the department.
  • Help with student class registration, advisement, and appointment scheduling; review, verify, and process student intake applications and related documentation.
  • Use Banner Student Information to create CNM student ID numbers for new students.
  • Perform student registration for HSE and ESL students, and provide class schedules to faculty and students.
  • Interpret and enforce department policies and procedures regarding student registration, multiple enrollment, and drops.
  • Provide office administrative support, including purchasing and textbook orders and distribution.
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development training.
  • Train and supervise student employees.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience.
  • Grant Funded Position through 06/31/2026
  • Preference: Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • Shift Mon-Thursday 9 am-6 pm Friday 8 am-5 pm
  • Best Consideration Date for Application 01/23/26
