The Role
We are seeking a mid-level SDET to design, build, and maintain automated UI and API tests using our Playwright-based automation framework(s). You will work in a multi-repository environment with a mix of legacy and modern applications (UI and API) and will partner closely with engineers, QA, and our Lead SDET/DevEx Engineer to improve automated quality signals and reduce reliance on manual regression.
This role is focused on test automation engineering (not SRE/DevOps). Our CI/CD runs in Azure DevOps, and we use Azure Application Insights for observability and triage.
Environment
• Many repositories (UI, APIs, integration/interface services), mixed maturity (legacy + new)
• Tech: .NET Core / C#, Angular, TypeScript
• Primary UI automation: Playwright (TypeScript)
• CI/CD: Azure DevOps Pipelines (YAML)
• Observability: Azure Application Insights
• Database: MS SQL Server 2019 (coordination with DBA partners as needed)
Key Responsibilities:
UI Automation (Playwright)
- Implement and maintain Playwright (TypeScript) UI automation tests for critical user workflows.
- Apply established framework patterns (fixtures, helpers, tagging, configuration) and contribute incremental framework improvements when needed.
- Design tests for reliability and maintainability:
- stable selectors and page/component abstractions where appropriate
- deterministic waits and assertions
- test isolation and minimization of cross-test coupling
- Triage failing tests and diagnose root causes; implement fixes or collaborate with engineering when failures indicate product defects.
API Testing
- Implement and maintain automated API tests for key endpoints and backend workflows.
- Use shared helper clients/fixtures to create readable, maintainable tests and avoid duplication.
- Collaborate with developers to improve API testability (clear contracts, consistent error behavior, and appropriate test hooks as needed).
Test Data, Fixtures, Helpers, and Shared Resources
- Contribute to reusable test utilities and shared resources:
- TypeScript helper classes (API clients, data builders, auth helpers)
- fixtures and environment config
- test data files and repeatable setup approaches
- Help improve test data strategies so automation is reliable across environments.
CI Signal Quality (in partnership with Lead SDET/DevEx + DevOps)
- Ensure tests run reliably in CI and provide actionable diagnostics per team standards (screenshots, traces, logs).
- Help maintain a balanced suite (fast smoke coverage for PRs; broader regression for nightly) under guidance from the framework owner.
- Identify opportunities to reduce runtime and flakiness (e.g., parallelization readiness, eliminating redundant E2E tests).
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
- Participate in code reviews for test changes; provide feedback on test design and maintainability.
- Document testing approaches and patterns so engineers and QA can contribute effectively.
- Participate in agile ceremonies and proactively surface quality risks and coverage gaps.
- Support continuous improvement of the framework by proposing small enhancements and refactors.
Requirements:
- 3-6+ years of experience in QA automation, SDET, or software engineering with a significant testing focus.
- Hands-on experience authoring automated UI tests with Playwright.
- Experience writing automated API tests (REST, JSON, auth flows) and understanding of HTTP fundamentals.
- Working proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript (ability to write maintainable code, not just scripts).
- Experience running automation in CI and interpreting CI results (Azure DevOps preferred).
- Strong debugging skills and ability to independently triage failures and propose fixes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience testing Angular applications and working effectively with frontend engineers.
- Familiarity with .NET Core services and the ability to read/debug basic C# when diagnosing test failures.
- Experience with SQL Server-backed applications and test data setup concepts.
- Familiarity with Azure Application Insights for troubleshooting and triage.
- Experience with maintainable automation patterns (fixtures, reusable helpers, page/component abstractions).
