The China Industry Specialist (CIS) is a local, sector-focused research partner responsible for generating differentiated, forward-looking insights on China that directly support investment ideas and portfolio decision-making. The role combines deep industry knowledge with active network development to surface variant views, identify inflection points, and proactively engage Analysts and Portfolio Managers across the Investment Group. The role is based in our Shanghai, China (SHO) office.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and maintain deep expertise on assigned China sector(s), key companies, value chains, and regulatory/policy drivers.
- Produce independent, opinionated research that is analytical, forward-looking, and explicitly linked to investment implications (bull/base/bear, signposts, catalysts, scenarios).
- Proactively identify and communicate emerging themes, inflection points, and idiosyncratic risks/opportunities; socialize them early with relevant Analysts/PMs and present ideas on broad investment calls.
- Build and leverage a differentiated on-the-ground network (companies, suppliers/customers, regulators, industry experts, competitors) to source proprietary channel checks and real-economy signals.
- Plan and execute proprietary primary research (meetings, site visits, conferences) and translate takeaways into actionable insights shared broadly and promptly.
- Partner with country, regional, and global Analysts and PMs on idea development, thesis refinement, and diligence, including pre- and post-meeting preparation, follow-up, and hypothesis testing.
- Maintain regular stakeholder coverage by formalizing touchpoints with core Analysts and PMs while avoiding a purely reactive model.
- Contribute to the team's operating rhythm, including a shared pipeline, weekly priorities, cross-sector collaboration, and peer review to raise output standards.
- Ensure compliance with applicable policies for interactions, information handling, and local market practices.
- Facilitate IG research trips to China in coordination with relevant Analysts, PMs, and the CARS team, drawing on local knowledge and industry contacts.
Output & engagement expectations
- High-frequency insights: short notes on key developments, management signals, policy changes, or channel checks shared in near real time.
- Periodic deep dives: thematic or industry pieces that frame a variant view, lay out scenarios, and define signposts and investment implications.
- Proactive stakeholder engagement: regularly scheduled touchpoints with primary coverage Analysts and PMs, plus targeted outreach when new insights emerge.
- Visibility of activity: clear communication of upcoming or ongoing fieldwork and succinct post-activity readouts.
Qualifications
- Significant experience in China-relevant sell-side research or industry strategy roles with demonstrated sector depth.
- Strong analytical toolkit: ability to build a view from primary signals, triangulate evidence, and communicate uncertainty and scenarios clearly.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain high-quality networks and convert access into differentiated insight.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to deliver concise, decision-useful takeaways to senior stakeholders.
- High integrity and strong judgment, including comfort operating in complex policy and regulatory environments.
- Language skills, as applicable to coverage: professional fluency in Mandarin and English preferred.
- Ability to travel for meetings (at least 30-50% of the time).
Core competencies
- Independent thinking and willingness to take a view while remaining open, curious, and receptive to challenge.
- Proactivity and ownership: drives the agenda rather than waiting for requests and follows through reliably.
- Synthesis: distills noisy, real-time information into clear signposts and actionable implications.
- Stakeholder management and collaboration across time zones and investment styles.
- Communication discipline: concise writing, clear structure, and an explicit "so what?"
