Senior Platform Engineer I - PayCloud Team

3 days ago Amsterdam, Netherlands

About us: At Booking.com, data drives our decisions. Technology is at our core. And innovation is everywhere. But our company is more than datasets, lines of code or A/B tests. We're the thrill of the first night in a new place. The excitement of the next morning. The friends you make. The journeys you take. The sights you see. And the food you sample. Through our products, partners and people, we can empower everyone to experience the world.

Leadership/Team Quote:

FinTech business unit - with teams in Amsterdam, Bangalore, London and Shanghai - develops new products and drives innovation to help us continue removing financial friction from the travel process. That makes buying and selling travel-related products and services simpler for both travelers and partners.

At PayCloud, we are leading the migration of our Payments platform to the AWS cloud. Our mission is to provide a seamless migration while ensuring the platform's scalability, reliability, and security. We leverage Cell Based Architecture (CBA) principles to achieve resilience and maintainability in distributed systems.

As a Senior Platform Engineer, you are a builder with a product mindset. While you possess deep engineering skill sets, your primary mission is to design, build, and maintain internal platforms that provide developers with self-service tools. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to architect solutions that align with our Cell-based Architecture (CBA) principles and drive the migration of the Booking payments platform to AWS.
Unlike a traditional operational team, we are focused on building and producing the platform as a product. We don't just "keep the lights on"; we build the CBA platform ourselves to support the entire product lifecycle.

Key Job Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Implement tools and cloud infrastructure that empower the migration of the Payments platform to a CBA-based AWS environment
  • Approach the platform as a product, refining tooling to support the product lifecycle and "coding our way out of problems" to address the needs
  • Implement best practices for cloud-native development, including Infrastructure as Code (IaC), microservices, and serverless architectures
  • Drive continuous improvement in system performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Partner with architects, principals and product managers to define technical requirements; mentor junior engineers and promote knowledge sharing
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and industry trends to drive innovation and maintain a competitive edge

Role Qualifications and Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; Master's degree preferred
  • 8+ years in Software, Platform, or SRE roles
  • Deep proficiency in AWS services (S3, Lambda, RDS, ECS/EKS) and cloud-based networking
  • Strong skills in cloud networking are essential for our fully AWS-based environment
  • Good knowledge of monitoring and logging tools for cloud environments
  • Good knowledge of continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines and tools.
  • Proficiency in Terraform or CloudFormation
  • Programming: Solid experience in at least one programming language (Java, Python, Go).
  • Deep understanding of sophisticated, scalable, and distributed systems
  • AWS certification (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified Developer)
  • Experience with Agile frameworks and acts as a tech lead in driving refinement and solution design together with the team
  • Excellent problem-solving, interpersonal skills, and the ability to "step out of your comfort zone" in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
