Sr. Manager, EHS
About This Role
The Solothurn manufacturing site is an ultra‑modern, large‑scale biologics drug substance manufacturing facility with approximately 400 Biogen FTEs and a commensurate contract workforce.
As the Senior Manager of EHS, you will report to the Site Head of EHS. This role is designed to operationally lead the EHS Management System and to develop the capabilities required to assume full site EHS leadership in the future.
You will be responsible for operationalizing and embedding the ISO‑certified EHS Management System into daily site operations, under the direction of the Site Head of EHS. The role ensures compliance with local, national, and company regulations and promotes a strong culture of safety and environmental stewardship across the site.
What You'll Do
Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure the site complies with all applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations.
- Manage the preparation and submission of required regulatory reports, permits, and documentation.
- Stay current on relevant EHS legislation and regulations and advise on potential impacts to the organization.
Risk Management:
- Manage the risk assessment process.
- Conduct regular site audits, inspections, and assessments to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement.
- Manage the EHS event investigation and corrective action implementation process.
- Coordinate the insurance risk management program.
Health, Safety & Training:
- Promote a proactive safety climate by developing and implementing programs that engage employees at all levels.
- Manage the design and delivery of EHS training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Manage the on-site occupational health service.
- Manage the industrial hygiene assessment program.
Sustainability & Environmental Stewardship:
- Drive sustainability initiatives, including waste reduction, energy conservation, and pollution prevention.
- Ensure the effective management of hazardous materials and waste in compliance with regulations.
- In coordination with internal departments, lead the site's efforts in achieving corporate sustainability goals and environmental certifications.
Emergency Response & Preparedness:
- In coordination and collaboration with Security and Operations Risk Management, develop and maintain emergency response plans and procedures for the site.
- Coordinate with local emergency services and agencies to ensure preparedness for potential incidents.
- In coordination and collaboration with Security, lead the site's response to emergencies as appropriate, ensuring the safety of employees and the protection of assets.
Performance Monitoring & Reporting:
- Manage the internal audit process
- Establish, monitor, and manage key performance indicators (KPIs) for EHS performance and track progress against targets.
- Prepare and present EHS performance reports to site leadership, identifying trends and recommending actions.
- Benchmark site EHS performance against industry standards and best practices.
Who You Are
You are already an accomplished environment, health and safety professional in pharmaceutical or chemical process industries. You are seeking a new challenge that is on your path to a Head of Site EHS or a Global EHS position. You have successfully embedded EHS Management Systems into regular operations, and you understand that EHS Management Systems only reach their potential when leadership integrates the principles into their working behaviours. You are very tech savvy and totally at ease with modern data systems. You possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and are comfortable engaging with internal and external stakeholders. Your ability to embrace change and drive continuous improvement is evident in your commitment to advancing EHS programs and ensuring compliance in a dynamic biopharma environment.

Required Skills:
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive EHS experience.
- Minimum 5 years' experience in managing EHS programs in a pharmaceutical or chemical process manufacturing environment; biologics manufacturing experience preferred.
- Detailed knowledge of ISO certified EHS Management Systems, technical programs and Swiss legislation.
- Demonstrable track record of driving safety culture transformation and leading successful EHS initiatives.
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degree preferred.
- Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or similar are highly desirable.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with advanced computer literacy.
- Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and external regulatory agencies effectively.
- Proficient in both written and spoken German and English.
