About This Role

As the Head of Clinical Biomarkers, West Coast Hub (WCH), you will lead the Clinical Biomarkers function for our portfolio of investigational therapeutics spanning late stage research, early development, and late/registrational clinical development stages. This is a senior leadership role responsible for setting the strategic direction, oversight, and portfolio-wide advancement of the clinical biomarkers pillar for the WCH portfolio of therapeutics, covering multiple indications and therapeutic areas. Reporting directly to the Head of Biomarkers and Clinical Pharmacology, WCH, this role is pivotal in shaping and executing the biomarker vision for the organization in close collaboration with Biogen Research, Development, and Commercial leaders. The role will manage a team of Biomarker and Bioanalytical scientists, including Director-level biomarker leads and individual contributor direct reports.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and lead the strategy for clinical biomarker development across the WCH portfolio, ensuring alignment with enterprise goals and therapeutic area priorities
  • Serve as a key member of the WCH Biomarker and Clinical Pharmacology leadership team and WCH Development Extended Leadership Team, contributing to the vision and goals of the WCH organization
  • Serve as a key thought leader and decision-maker in biomarker strategy, influencing cross-functional and cross-portfolio initiatives
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and execution of biomarker strategies for WCH clinical programs, ensuring scientific rigor, innovation, and regulatory readiness from Phase 1 through pivotal studies in multiple therapeutic areas
  • Drive and support indication expansion and lifecycle management through translational biomarker insights and integrated development planning
  • Recruit, lead, and develop a high-performing, diverse team of Biomarker leads and Biomarker/Bioanalytical scientists, fostering a culture of innovation, scientific rigor, and collaboration
  • Mentor and develop biomarker talent (including Director-level), ensuring succession planning and career growth across the organization
  • Serve as the key biomarker liasion with leaders in research, clinical development, regulatory, medical affairs, commercial, and other functions to drive alignment and integration of biomarker strategies with broader organizational goals
  • Lead and oversee biomarker development initiatives for the WCH, ensuring cutting-edge approaches and successful translation into clinical programs
  • Lead strategic partnerships with academic institutions, external partners, and consortia to advance biomarker science and influence industry standards
  • Ensure effective resource allocation, budget management, and operational execution of biomarker projects including management of outsourced activities and cross-functional matrix teams
  • Author and review key scientific, regulatory, and clinical documents
  • Drive biomarker publication strategy and represent Biogen in key external forums, regulatory engagements, and scientific conferences
  • Champion the adoption and integration of cutting-edge biomarker technologies including cytometry, immunoassays, and translational platforms
  • Evaluate emerging methodologies and platforms to enhance biomarker capabilities and clinical relevance

Qualifications:

  • PhD or MD/PhD in relevant scientific field with 15+ years of progressing leadership experience in biomarker development, including significant tenure in industry
  • Demonstrated track record of strategic leadership and successful delivery of biomarker strategies across multiple therapeutic areas, ideally including immune-mediated diseases and/or nephrology
  • Extensive experience leading Director-level and above professionals, with demonstrated success in talent development and organizational scaling
  • Exceptional executive communication and influence skills, with a history of effective engagement across senior leadership and external stakeholders
  • Deep expertise in clinical development, regulatory strategy, translational science, and life cycle management for therapeutics, including oversight from Phase 1 through registrational studies
  • Demonstrated ability to drive cross-functional alignment and integration across R&D and commercial functions
  • Advanced knowledge of biomarker technologies and platforms (e.g. cytometry, immunoassay, genomics) and their clinical application
  • Recognized thought leader with a strong external presence in regulatory, academic, and industry forums
  • Experience in B cell immunology, nephrology, and/or solid organ transplant is highly desirable

Additional Information

The base compensation range for this role is: $246,000.00-$338,000.00

Base salary offered is determined through an analytical approach utilizing a combination of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills & experience, job location, and internal equity.
