As the EHS Manager, you will lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Biogen's Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Management System. This role is a key member of the PO&T/EHS organization and is responsible for managing site-specific EHS programs, ensuring regulatory compliance, and promoting a strong culture of safety and sustainability.

You will oversee EHS operations, training, communications, and management system processes while partnering closely with business leaders, global colleagues, and functional teams to support Biogen's values of safety, integrity, and accountability.

What You'll Do

Lead and Manage EHS Programs:

Direct site-level implementation of Biogen's EHS Management System, ensuring compliance with global standards and regulatory requirements.

Team Leadership:

Guide and mentor site EHS administrators and program leads to drive consistency, efficiency, and best practices across the organization.

Physical Safety & Risk Management:

  • Oversee and strengthen physical safety programs, including:
  • Daily oversight of laboratory, production, and maintenance area safety.
  • Job hazard analyses (JHAs) and risk assessments for high-risk activities.
  • Control of hazardous energy (LOTO), confined space entry, and elevated work programs.
  • Fall protection program administration and inspection of harnesses and anchor points.
  • Oversight of contractor safety programs, including permitting, site orientations, and field inspections.
  • Equipment safety evaluations, guarding compliance, and preventive maintenance collaboration.
  • Emergency preparedness and response coordination, including evacuation drills and spill response readiness.
  • PPE selection, fit testing, inventory management, and compliance monitoring.

Training & Learning:

Serve as EHS Functional Learning Lead - maintain and enhance global training matrices, needs assessments, and learning tools to ensure robust compliance and competency.

Communications & Engagement:

Lead EHS communications, awareness campaigns, and engagement programs such as Earth Month, Safety Days, and the annual Biogen EHS Awards.

Inspections & Investigations:

Manage EHS inspections, audits, and event investigations to ensure timely corrective actions and continuous improvement. Conduct regular floor walks and field verifications to proactively identify and mitigate hazards.

Systems & Data Management:

Administer and optimize EHS IT tools (e.g., myEHS, Veeva, 3E), ensuring data accuracy, reporting integrity, and ease of use for stakeholders.

Documentation & Governance:

Maintain controlled EHS documentation, SOPs, and management system content in accordance with Biogen standards.

Metrics & Reporting:

Develop dashboards, analyze performance trends, and prepare reports for leadership.

Collaboration:

Partner with Sustainability, Facilities, and Global Security to ensure alignment across environmental and safety initiatives.

Who You Are

You are an experienced EHS professional who thrives in a collaborative, science-driven environment. You combine technical knowledge with strong leadership and communication skills to guide others toward safer, more sustainable operations. You are proactive, analytical, and driven to make a measurable difference in both compliance and culture.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Engineering, Life Sciences, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive EHS experience, preferably in a pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or highly regulated industry.
  • Strong understanding of EHS regulations and compliance requirements (OSHA, EPA, ISO 14001, ISO 45001).
  • Proven experience managing EHS management systems and digital tools (e.g., myEHS, Veeva, 3E).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, contracts, and vendor relationships.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Experience leading inspections, training programs, and safety culture initiatives.

Preferred Skills

  • Professional EHS certification such as CSP, CIH, or CHMM.
  • Experience in sustainability reporting and metrics tracking.
  • Participation in professional EHS associations or networks.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems and global training frameworks.

Additional Information

The base compensation range for this role is: $104,000.00-$139,000.00

Base salary offered is determined through an analytical approach utilizing a combination of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills & experience, job location, and internal equity.

Regular employees are eligible to receive both short term and long-term incentives, including cash bonus and equity incentive opportunities, designed to reward recent achievements and recognize your future potential based on individual, business unit and company performance.
