Co-op, Patient Communications & Innovation

About the Role:

This application is for a 6-month student role from January - June 2027. Resume review begins in October 2026.

The Health Literacy & Plain Language Center of Excellence (CoE) helps make clinical research information easier for patients and caregivers to understand. As a co-op, you will support innovative projects that improve the clarity, accessibility, and usability of patient-facing materials across the organization.

In this role, you will work at the intersection of health literacy, user experience, visual communication, and process improvement. You will help evaluate opportunities to incorporate more visual elements into informed consent forms (ICFs), contribute to the development of a patient-friendly visual library, and support efforts to improve information management and reporting capabilities within the CoE and within the ICF team.

What You'll Do:

As a Co-op, you will:

• Evaluate opportunities to incorporate visual elements into ICFs to improve understanding and usability.

• Research and develop concepts for patient-friendly graphics, icons, illustrations, tables, and other visual communication approaches.

• Create and pilot a plain language Schedule of Assessments table template for ICFs that is aligned with health literacy and accessibility best practices.

• Benchmark visual communication approaches against external resources, including the Harvard MRCT Image Glossary.

• Support development of a patient-friendly visual library through visual concepts, storyboards, design briefs, and annotated examples.

• Help redesign and reorganize the Informed Consent Management (ICM) SharePoint environment.

• Explore mailbox automation opportunities and enhanced metrics reporting.

• Present recommendations and deliverables to stakeholders.

Who You Are:

• Passionate about improving accessibility and understandability of information.

• Interest in health literacy, informed consent, patient engagement, and/or health communications.

• Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills.

• Strong organizational and project management skills.

• Experience with Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and Teams.

• Experience with ICF authoring or oversight is a plus.

• Experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or other graphic design tools is a plus.

To participate in the Biogen Internship or Co-op Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Legal authorization to work in the U.S.

• At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date.

• Currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college, university or skills program/apprenticeship.

Education Requirements

• Degree Levels: Bachelor's or Master's candidates.

• Preferred Majors: Health Communications, Public Health, Information Design, Graphic Design, Communication Studies, Health Informatics, Digital Media.

Additional Information

The base compensation range for this role is: $23.00-$29.00

The actual hourly wage offered will consider the candidate's current academic level and degree candidacy, inclusive of Associate, Bachelor's, Master's, JD, MD, PhD and MBA programs. It will comply with state or local minimum wage requirements specific to the job location.
