Associate Director, Enterprise Architecture, Global Commercial & Medical IT
About This Role
Biogen is seeking an accomplished Associate Director, Enterprise Architecture to define and govern the technology architecture supporting our Global Commercial & Medical (GCM) organization. This senior individual-contributor role ensures technology solutions align with business strategy, regulatory expectations, and compliance requirements while delivering secure, scalable, and business-value-driven outcomes.
As the lead architect for the Commercial and Medical domains, you will own the target-state architecture, business capability roadmap, and integration strategy across a diverse ecosystem of platforms and applications. You will proactively identify capability gaps, reduce duplication and fragmentation, and guide architecture decisions that improve speed-to-market, reduce risk, and strengthen long-term technology scalability.
Working closely with business and IT leaders, you will translate strategic priorities - including new product launches, international expansion, acquisitions, omnichannel engagement, and medical communications - into actionable technology roadmaps. This role is critical to simplifying the GCM technology landscape, enabling innovation, and ensuring Commercial & Medical platforms are future-ready.
What You'll Do
- Define and govern GCM enterprise architecture standards across Commercial & Medical IT, ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture principles, security, compliance, and business strategy.
- Serve as the primary architecture leader for strategic GCM initiatives, shaping early solution designs and guiding key architectural decisions to ensure alignment with the target-state architecture.
- Lead GCM integration and data architecture strategy, defining how systems connect through scalable, secure patterns such as APIs, event-driven architecture, data-sharing models, and enterprise data flows.

- Identify opportunities to simplify and rationalize the application portfolio, including reducing overlapping systems, improving integration quality, lowering total cost of ownership, and avoiding unnecessary technology fragmentation.
- Provide thought leadership on emerging technologies, including cloud services, automation, data products, AI/ML, and generative AI, evaluating their fit for GCM business needs and integrating high-value capabilities with the appropriate security and compliance controls.
- Partner with cross-functional IT teams, including enterprise integration, data and analytics, security, infrastructure, delivery, and platform teams, to ensure architecture decisions are practical, scalable, and executable.
- Mentor and guide solution architects, platform architects, technical leads, and delivery teams to drive consistency in solution design and adoption of architecture best practices.
- Represent GCM in enterprise architecture forums, ensuring Commercial & Medical priorities are considered in cross-functional technology decisions.
Who You Are
You are a strategic enterprise architect who understands how technology decisions create business value. You bring the ability to connect business strategy, capability needs, platform architecture, data flows, and delivery execution into a clear, actionable technology direction.
You are comfortable operating as a senior advisor and influencer across global business and IT teams. You can simplify complex technology topics for non-technical stakeholders, guide teams through ambiguity, and drive alignment without relying on direct authority.
You are future-focused, practical, and outcome-oriented - able to assess emerging technologies such as AI, automation, cloud services, and data products, while ensuring solutions remain secure, compliant, scalable, and aligned to business priorities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent experience.
- 10+ years of progressively responsible IT experience, preferably including global or enterprise-level roles.
- 3-5+ years of experience in architecture leadership roles, such as Enterprise Architect, Solution Architect, or equivalent.
- Strong experience in Enterprise Architecture and Solution Architecture within life sciences, pharmaceuticals, biotech, healthcare, or another regulated industry.
- Experience supporting Commercial and/or Medical business domains, with understanding of business capabilities, value streams, regulatory considerations, and global operating needs.
- Deep knowledge of enterprise integration patterns, data architecture, APIs, event-driven architecture, and secure system interoperability.
- Proven ability to translate business priorities into target-state architecture, roadmaps, and practical solution designs.
- Familiarity with formal architecture frameworks and modeling techniques (e.g., TOGAF, ArchiMate, or equivalent).
- Strong leadership, communication, stakeholder management, and influencing skills across business, IT, and global delivery teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree, such as MS, MBA, or equivalent.
- Experience with modern Commercial & Medical platforms, such as CRM, omnichannel engagement, medical communication, customer data, and analytics platforms.
- Hands-on familiarity with major enterprise technologies, such as Salesforce, Veeva, cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, Azure), and enterprise integration tools.
- Familiarity with Customer Data Platforms, master data, data products, or advanced analytics ecosystems.
- Experience assessing and integrating AI/ML, generative AI, automation, or cloud-based capabilities in a regulated, compliant environment.
- Experience working in Agile delivery environments, including cross-functional global Agile teams; SAFe experience is a plus.
