Project Overview
We are building high performing teams to deliver complex EPC heavy civil project and looking for motivated, hands-on, collaborative innovators, doers, and problem solvers. The projects are hydro power generation with scopes including roadway development, significant structures including dams, spillways, tunnel waterways, inlet/outlet structures, hydromechanical equipment, mechanical and electrical systems, and site facilities and buildings. Job Summary:
The Structural Engineer is responsible for independently executing and technically leading structural engineering activities for major components of a large pumped storage hydropower project. The role involves responsibility for design development, review, and integration of complex structural systems associated with underground works, hydraulic structures, powerhouses, dams, waterways, and balance-of-plant facilities.
The position requires the exercise of sound professional judgment, close coordination with multi-disciplinary teams, and engagement with designers, checkers, construction, and interface stakeholders to ensure safe, constructible, and compliant structural designs in accordance with SRP requirements and applicable codes.
A key part of this role is collaboration with JV partner, design consultant and the owner. The senior structural engineer shall work with the team to establish regular meetings with design consultants and other external stakeholders as required and reporting cycles for managing, coordinating, and assuring the design. #LI-RM1
Major Responsibilities:
- Perform and/or lead the structural analysis and design of reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, and structural steel systems for underground caverns and powerhouse structures, intake/outlet structures, shafts, tunnels, and waterways, dams, retaining walls, and hydraulic structures and balance of plant and auxiliary facilities
- This role will include working with the Design Subcontractor and discharging responsibilities as set out in the Management of Third-Party Engineering, 10G-M41-00013 as part of the BTJV Engineering team.
- Review design calculations, design criteria, technical reports, and specifications.
- Ensure designs comply with project design criteria, applicable codes and standards (AISC, ACI, Eurocode, USACE/USBR where applicable).
- Support design maturity planning and deliverables aligned with EDD / design stage gateways.
- Review structural drawings and models prior to issue to ensure technical correctness, constructability, and interface alignment.
- Coordinate closely with geotechnical and hydraulic disciplines, ensuring structural designs reflect ground conditions, load cases, and hydraulic actions appropriate to pumped storage facilities.
- Identify and resolve design risks, clashes, and constructability concerns early in the design process.
- Provide engineering support during construction, including responses to RFIs, technical queries, non-conformance evaluations, and design clarifications.
- Support resolution of field-driven design issues in coordination with construction engineering and site teams.
- Participate in constructability and risk reviews as required.
- Apply Bechtel's Engineering Quality Management System, checking and review protocols, and design verification requirements.
- Ensure compliance with ES&H requirements, including structural safety, temporary works interfaces (as applicable), and risk mitigation principles.
- Support internal and external design reviews, audits, and regulatory submissions.
- Coordinate structural interfaces with OEMs (turbine generator supplier, auxiliary equipment vendors).
- Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, safety in design workshops, and HAZID/HAZOP reviews.
- Coordinate and manage the review of Civil Structural deliverables produced by design consultant, including schedules, reports, critical issues, risks and providing feedback to project engineering manager.
- Chair discipline specific meetings and recording actions.
- Represent the client in technical meetings and Value Engineering analysis.
- Provide guidance and ensure quality of design by independent engineering firms carrying out detailed design, including compliance with customer requirements, local design guidelines and codes, international codes and standards.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- University/College graduate with BS (or Master's degree) in Civil Engineering or equivalent from a recognized Institute with an overall experience of 15 years.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in Civil engineering aspects for hydropower, pumped storage, or large power/infrastructure projects.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability.
- Professional/Chartered Engineer required with broad knowledge of US government compliance standards.
- Knowledge of current computer applications for Civil engineering and design including appropriate knowledge of CAD e.g., AutoCAD, MS Word and Excel for managing design reviews.
- Able to communicate technical information in writing and orally - to interrelate effectively with individuals and teams and have presentation skills.
- Able to work within a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural team and manage challenging multi-cultural relationships across a range of entities.
- Flexible and able to adapt to working in a demanding environment, including traveling and working remotely if / when required.
- Familiarity with EPC execution, engineering workflows, and document control systems.
- Exposure to lenders' technical advisor or independent engineers
- Ability to work independently, take ownership of assigned scope, and meet schedule commitments.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of technical narratives and reports.
- Collaborative mindset with the ability to interface effectively with diverse stakeholders.
