As a key contributor within the Equipment Design & Integration (EDI) Team, the Modernization Staff Engineer is a manufacturing-process-focused professional who leads or contributes to the modernisation plan for their assigned scope, ensuring it is thoroughly assessed, translated into executable actions, tracked, followed up, and driven to completion. The role includes performing the technical evaluations, capability assessments, feasibility analyses, and resource planning required to build strong modernisation plans, helping to ensure alignment with strategic direction set by senior leaders.
The Staff Engineer develops the execution plan for modernisation activities within their scope, including identification and coordination of internal and external resources needed to complete the work. This includes working closely with suppliers that can provide solutions or technologies required for successful execution.
The Staff Engineer works cross-functionally with sites, suppliers, GIE teams, and key stakeholders to ensure effective execution of modernization activities while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and operational performance.

About the role:
You will maintain the modernisation plan for their assigned equipment families, process areas or manufacturing sites, ensuring clarity, executability, and alignment with modernisation strategy. Perform the technical assessments, evaluations, and analyses required to transform modernisation priorities into actionable plans. Develop and deploy the execution plan, defining activities, timelines, deliverables, and required resources (internal or external). Participate in coordination with suppliers and external partners, integrating applicable solutions into the execution plan and project delivery. Maintain, tracks, and updates modernisation plans based on site feedback, data, and leadership guidance. Ensure effective follow-up, risk management, and closure of actions within their scope. Execute assigned modernisation projects and works cross-functionally to ensure successful implementation across sites.
Main responsibilities will include:
Develops & Execute Equipment/Process Modernisation Strategy:
- Maintains the modernisation plan for their assigned scope, ensuring it is executable and aligned with strategic direction.
- Performs the technical assessments, analyses, and feasibility evaluations needed to build strong modernisation plans.
- Develops the execution roadmap, defining activities, sequencing, required resources, and sourcing needs.
- Assists in coordinating required internal resources (engineering, maintenance, validation, operations) for plan execution.
- Participates closely with suppliers, evaluating technical solutions and integrating their activities into the execution plan.
- Executes modernisation activities, ensuring progress tracking, timely issue resolution, and closure of assigned actions.
- Collects and analyzes performance data to identify opportunities and support business case development.
- Participates in design reviews, provides hands-on engineering input, and ensures solution feasibility.
- Prepares the necessary technical documentation, validation protocols, and execution packages.
- Applies DFM, standardization, and reliability principles throughout execution.

Provide support for Standardization and Document/Leverage Successes:
- Documents improvements and maintains accurate modernisation plan versions in centralized systems.
- Integrates validated improvements and supplier learnings into standardized practices.
- Support refinement of standard operating practices developed by Modernisation Leadership.
- Supports deployment of validated solutions across sites, including coordination with suppliers when required.
- Prepares technical scopes and contributes to design reviews and root-cause technical analyses.
Provides Targeted Engineering Upskilling Opportunities:
- Identifies skill or capability gaps encountered during modernisation execution and communicates them for upskilling actions.
- Supports the GIE Learning Academy by delivering occasional technical training as requested.
- Provides technical support within their expertise area
- Contributes to knowledge-sharing activities
Leadership & Collaboration Responsibilities:
- Ensuring personal work aligns with priorities established by Modernisation Leadership.
- Demonstrates accountability for modernisation plan execution, progress, follow-up, and timely completion.
- Communicates execution status, risks, resource needs, and supplier dependencies.
- Collaborates with site teams, supplier representatives, and cross-functional GIE partners to resolve obstacles and ensure plan execution.
- Supports and maintains strong technical partnerships with suppliers providing modernisation technologies or services.
- Promotes continuous improvement by documenting lessons learned and sharing across the network.
- Provides technical insights when needed.
About you:
- B.S. in Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred). Advanced degree (MS in Engineering or MBA) is a plus but not required.
- Up to 8 years of experience in engineering, production, or maintenance within Medical Device or other highly regulated industries.
- Exposure to modernisation projects, process improvement, and equipment integration.
- Familiarity with Lean/6 tools, PFMEA, GD&T, tolerance analysis, and SPC (Green Belt certification preferred).
- Strong technical problem-solving skills and ability to work collaboratively across functions.
- Effective communication skills to support cross-site initiatives and share best practices.
Travel Requirements: Up to 30%
The salary range information: £60,000 - £70,000 + Bonus
