Managing Editor, DX

Today Flexible / Remote

About DX

DX is one of the fastest-growing SaaS companies in the country, helping engineering leaders build high-performing, productive teams. Our platform delivers actionable insights into developer experience and productivity - empowering companies like Netflix, Uber, Dell, Pfizer, and Vanguard to operate at their best.

DX has grown from a bootstrapped startup into a category-defining company with a customer base that spans some of the most sophisticated engineering organizations in the world. We recently closed on our acquisition by Atlassian, which means more resources behind our mission, faster product innovation, and an even bigger impact for the teams who rely on us.

How we work at DX:

Companies have all kinds of culture slides. At DX, we want to be very clear about what we care about and how we judge performance. For us, it all boils down to individual mastery, becoming the best at your craft. Those who exhibit this quality will thrive here and be unduly rewarded. We can't control outcomes due to competitors, the economy, decision-makers, etc., but what we can control is doing our jobs at the highest level possible.

About DX Research

The DX Research team's mission is to advance how the world understands and improves developer productivity. We turn data, research, and real-world stories into actionable insights that help engineering leaders make better decisions and in doing so, reinforce DX as the trusted source of truth in developer productivity.

We sit at the intersection of academic research, industry practice, and product reality. Our work shapes how DX builds its products, how Atlassian talks about developer productivity, and how engineering leaders around the world think about their teams.

About the role

We're looking for a Managing Editor to own the quality bar and voice behind DX Research. You'll be the editor-of-record for everything the DX Research team produces spending most of your time deep in drafts, sharpening structure, language, and arguments. You'll work with a small group of very senior ICs (Distinguished Researchers and Software Engineering Advisors) to shape ideas, line edit their work, and ensure that every piece we publish is tight, insightful, and unmistakably DX.

This is a hands-on editorial role. Expect to spend the majority of your time in deep editing rather than managing agencies or delegating edits to others. You'll report into marketing and be embedded in the DX Research team. Your top priority will be to take ownership of the content review process. Afterwards, you'll take ownership of the process of collaboratively defining the research/content roadmap.

Here are DX's voice and guiding principles. You'll be responsible for protecting and elevating this bar in everything we publish.

Voice:

  • Grounded in research. Shaped by published research and what we observe across hundreds of real-world teams.
  • Opinionated. We have a clear, informed perspective on how developer productivity should be measured and improved.
  • Transparent and balanced. Confident in our approach, open to updating our opinions as evidence evolves.
  • Clear and concise. Every piece delivers insight, useful commentary, or recommendations without unnecessary theory or detours.
  • Never "cute." We aim to educate, not entertain. Our tone is clear, human, and professional never whimsical, cheesy, or cute.

Guiding principles:

  • #1 goal = deliver insight. If it feels obvious to our audience, we go deeper or find a sharper angle.
  • Make it worth paying for. If we wouldn't pay for it, we don't ship it.
  • Do the work for them. We push for actionable guidance: frameworks, templates, maturity models, and real-world examples.
  • Get external feedback. We seek tough, credible reviewers and don't accept mediocrity.

What you'll do

This is a wide-ranging role. Below are examples of the types of work you'll own.

Editorial leadership and quality

  • Serve as the editor-of-record for DX Research: line edit, structure, and sharpen everything we publish. Ensure every piece is clear and concise, grounded in evidence, aligned with DX's voice and frameworks, and worth the time of a CTO or VP of Engineering.
  • Give direct, high-quality editorial feedback to Distinguished ICs and senior leaders pushing for stronger arguments, tighter framing, and more actionable takeaways.

Cadence and portfolio management

  • Own the content calendar for DX Research, including: 2 "small ships" per researcher per month and 1 "big ship" per researcher per quarter.
  • Balance the portfolio so our quarterly output feels intentional and cumulative, not random.

Thematic planning and collaboration

  • Facilitate quarterly and annual planning with the research team. Help the research team define themes and priority topics (e.g., AI impact, platform teams, measurement frameworks).
  • Map how small ships ladder into big ships.

Format innovation and channel packaging

  • Work with other members in marketing to chop and repackage big ideas into:
  • Essays, briefs, charts, and visual frameworks.
  • Talks, webinars, panels, and internal enablement.
  • Social posts, newsletters, and other lightweight formats.
  • Experiment with new formats that make our ideas easier to consume and apply (e.g., interactive tools, checklists, maturity models).
  • Ensure each major piece has a multi-channel plan, not just a single PDF or blog post.

Process, operations, and alignment

  • Design and run a lightweight editorial process: Brief → outline → draft → review → edit → design → publish → distribution.
  • Keep things moving without adding unnecessary bureaucracy.

How you work

If you see yourself in the list below, we'd love to hear from you.

  • 7+ years of experience in editorial, content, or thought leadership roles (e.g., managing editor, editorial director, head of content, senior content strategist) in B2B, tech, or adjacent fields.
  • Exceptional writer and editor: you can take a dense, complex draft and turn it into something sharp, clear, and compelling for senior engineering leaders.
  • You genuinely enjoy line-editing dense, complex drafts and would happily spend hours a day in suggested edits and comments if it means making the work sharper.
  • Comfortable editing very senior subject-matter experts you can push back, ask hard questions, and still be a trusted partner.
  • Strong sense of structure and narrative: you know how to turn research, data, and anecdotes into a coherent argument.
  • Highly organized and reliable: you can manage a complex editorial calendar and keep multiple pieces moving without dropping the ball.
  • Collaborative and low ego: you care about making the work great and helping others shine, not about having your name on everything.
  • Curious about developer productivity, developer experience, and how AI is changing software engineering you don't need to be a former engineer, but you're eager to learn and go deep.

It's nice if you have

  • Experience working with research-heavy or data-driven content (e.g., industry reports, benchmarks, surveys).
  • Background in or exposure to software engineering, developer tools, or DevEx.
  • Experience partnering with marketing teams to distribute and repurpose thought leadership content across channels.
  • Experience in a startup or high-growth environment where you had to build or mature an editorial function.

What you're looking for

You're looking for a role where you can:

  • Own the editorial bar and publishing engine for a small, high-caliber research team.
  • Work with some of the most senior experts in developer productivity and software engineering.
  • Shape how an entire industry thinks about developer productivity and AI not just ship "content."
  • Build a body of work you're proud of, with the autonomy to set high standards and the support to meet them.
  • Be the person others turn to when they ask, 'Does this sound like DX?

If that sounds like you, we'd love to talk.
