As a Mechanical Engineer, you'll leverage your strong foundation in physics, mathematics, and materials science to process and resolve mechanical problems, design and implement custom mechanical tooling and associated processes, and enable the handling, assembly, and disassembly of parts, components, sub-assemblies, and final assemblies throughout the product life cycle. You'll be responsible for designing, developing, and modifying mechanical engineering layouts, schematics, and specifications. You will oversee manufacturing and installation processes, ensuring adherence to industry standards and regulations-- and you'll coordinate the procurement and assembly of mechanical components and equipment for design projects, identifying sources of critical parts and subsystems to resolve technical issues.
Role
The Mechanical Engineer will serve as the technical expert supporting multiple semiconductor lab facilities within the SCLA portfolio. This role provides engineering governance, detailed technical review, capacity planning, commissioning leadership, and lifecycle stewardship of complex facility mechanical systems. The Mechanical Engineer will collaborate closely with Facilities Operations, Design & Construction, EHS, IFM partners, and crossfunctional engineering teams to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations aligned with business needs.
This position reports directly to the Director of Facilities & Engineering (SCLA).
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership & Governance
• Provide technical oversight and engineering review of mechanical designs, Basis of Design (BOD), construction documents, tool hookups, system upgrades, and fitup packages.
• Review, approve, and stamp mechanical drawings and specifications (where applicable).
• Develop and maintain sitespecific design criteria and mechanical engineering standards in collaboration with Facilities Operations, EHS, and D&C.
• Perform root cause analysis (RCA) for mechanical system issues and develop corrective/preventive action plans.
Facilities Systems Management
• Oversee mechanical systems for semiconductor facilities, including:
• Scrubbed exhaust systems
• RO/DI
• PCW
• WWT
• HVAC (MAU, AHU, chillers, boilers, cleanroom air systems)
• BMS/SCADA controls and monitoring
• Evaluate existing and emerging mechanical technologies to reduce operating cost, improve capacity, increase redundancy, and enhance system reliability.

• Support critical system investigations and recovery actions to safely restore operations.
Commissioning & Startup
• Lead commissioning efforts-including prefunctional checklists, functional testing, integrated systems testing, and acceptance for mechanical and utility systems.
• Validate sequence of operations and ensure alignment with site requirements and codes.
• Work with vendors and IFM partners to ensure proper turnover documentation including as-builts, SOOs, O&M manuals, balance reports, warranty files, and closeout packages.
Capacity Planning & Infrastructure Upgrades
• Model system capacity, redundancy, and growth curves; identify constraints and propose expansion strategies.
• Conduct building condition assessments, develop lifecycle investment recommendations, and support major asset replacements.
• Identify and execute safety, compliance, capacity, redundancy, and cost saving initiatives across multiple facilities.
IFM & Vendor Oversight
• Interact with and direct 3rdparty IFM providers to ensure proper operations and maintenance of mechanical, FLS, exhaust, and controls systems.
• Validate adherence to SOPs, PM programs, and contract requirements.
• Support incident investigations, close leading indicator gaps, and reinforce a proactive safety culture.
CrossFunctional Collaboration
• Partner with Facilities Ops, D&C, EHS, Process Engineering, BU tool owners, Planning, and Construction teams to enable reliable operations and minimize downtime.
• Support tool installations, shutdown coordination, design reviews, and construction interfaces.
• Communicate technical concepts clearly to both engineering and nontechnical stakeholders.
Budgeting & Business Alignment
• Assist with development of departmental budgets; manage assigned projects within scope, schedule, and cost.
• Provide engineering input to capital planning, project forecasting, and TCO optimization strategies.
• Recommend improvements to processes, programs, and facility systems in alignment with business needs.
Functional Knowledge
• Deep expertise in mechanical engineering, with broad understanding of electrical, controls, and process utility systems.
• Comprehensive knowledge of California Building, Mechanical, Plumbing codes, Title 24, NFPA, and environmental requirements.
• Demonstrated proficiency with AutoCAD, MS Office (Word, Excel, Project), and preferred experience with Revit/BIM, SCADA platforms (GE Cimplicity), and CMMS systems (Maximo).
• Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electromechanical systems including pneumatics, robotics interfaces, vacuum systems, and cleanroom support equipment.
Business Expertise
• 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience in semiconductor, cleanroom, or comparable high tech/industrial environments.
• Experience with contract management, vendor oversight, bid reviews, and negotiation.
• Ability to evaluate budgets, contribute to fiscal planning, and support financial governance.
• Anticipates regulatory changes and recommends facility modifications accordingly.
Leadership
• Leads cross functional technical projects with notable risk/complexity.
• Highly effective at multitasking and rapid response in operational events.
• Develops execution strategies for engineering tasks, upgrades, and system transitions.
• Promotes a culture of safety, collaboration, and engineering excellence.

Qualifications
• BS in Mechanical Engineering required.
• California PE (Mechanical) strongly preferred.
• 7-10+ years mechanical engineering design experience for industrial facilities, labs, cleanrooms, data centers, or campus utility systems.
• Experience with HVAC, chillers/boilers, process piping, utility distribution, and cleanroom mechanical systems.
• Able to independently execute mechanical engineering design and project support.
• LEED accreditation a plus.
• Experience with Revit/BIM a plus.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills essential.

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.
For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
