Software Engineering Manager - Observability & Resource Management

As an Engineering Manager focusing on cloud infrastructure systems, you will lead a team responsible for maintaining and enhancing critical platforms that power Apple's cloud ecosystem. Y our team's work will directly impact the efficiency , reliability ,and scalability of how cloud resources operate across Apple, enabling significant cost savings while ensuring teams have the tools and capabilities they need to launch new products and features. You'll work cross-functionally with finance, product, SRE, and platform teams to ensure system reliability and performance while driving the roadmap for next-generation capabilities.
Description
The Apple Services Engineering organization is seeking an experienced, self-motivated engineering manager with deep expertise in cloud infrastructure and platform systems. The successful candidate should have a strong aptitude for both technical leadership and people management, with the ability to context-switch between strategic planning and tactical execution. Experience building and scaling teams, driving complex cross-functional projects, and thriving under pressure are key skills required to succeed in this role. This candidate should be experienced in building strong partnerships, mentoring diverse talent, and creating an inclusive team culture.
Responsibilities
- In this role, you will:
- Lead and grow a team of engineers responsible for critical infrastructure systems and platforms
- Drive the technical vision and roadmap for your team's domain within the infrastructure ecosystem
- Partner with stakeholders across the organization to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions
- Establish best practices for code quality , system design, and operational excellence
- Mentor and develop engineers, conducting regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development discussions
- Participate in incident response and lead post-mortems to drive continuous improvement
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including SRE, finance, and product to ensure alignment on priorities
- Balance technical debt reduction with feature development to maintain system health
- Champion engineering best practices across the broader organization
- Drive adoption of new technologies and methodologies to improve system efficiency and reliability
- Your team will be responsible for:
- Building and maintaining infrastructure platforms that enable critical business capabilities
- Implementing robust systems that ensure efficient operation at Apple scale
- Developing tools and automation to improve operational efficiency
- Creating self-service platforms and APIs for internal customers
- Ensuring high availability and performance of critical infrastructure systems
- Driving standardization and best practices across the infrastructure landscape
Minimum Qualifications
- Proven experience leading backend engineering teams, with a focus on infrastructure, platform, or distributed systems
- 3+ years of people management experience with a track record of building and developing high-performing teams
- Strong technical background with hands-on experience in languages such as Java or GoLang
- Deep understanding of large-scale distributed systems and infrastructure platforms
- Experience building and operating mission-critical systems at scale
- Proficiency in database design and management (SQL and NoSQL)
- Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
- Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
- Knowledge of distributed systems, networking concepts, and infrastructure as code
- Excellent leadership and communication skills with ability to influence without authority

Pay & Benefits
At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $188,200 and $283,200, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple's Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
