Senior System Product Design Engineer

As a Product Designer on this team, you will be given ownership over the mechanical design of specific parts or modules within the product and will be responsible for the analysis, assembly, and reliability of these parts. In this role you will engage in frequent multi-disciplinary collaboration with teams like Industrial Design, Project Management, Materials, Manufacturing, EE, Display, Camera, Antenna, Battery, and more.

We are literally the hands-on technical team that carries the design of Apple products through the entire process, from early prototyping to mass production. By joining our team, you'll work side by side with your teammates inside Apple and at our partner facilities to define parts of the system in CAD, create drawings, and collaborate with vendors to produce these parts. You will perform engineering analyses on your designs using appropriate methods such as hand calculation, computer simulation, FEA, and dimensional tolerance analysis. You will participate in design reviews and help prepare issues list and provide feedback to help foresee potential design concerns. Additionally you will need to be flexible and willing and able to provide review and support on several aspects of a project simultaneously in a role of a Product Design First Responder & Design Enabler. Excellent communication skills including preparing slide presentations and participating in working meetings are critical. Our team is expected to set an example of technical excellence and you are responsible for your own work. Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including ID, EE, Manufacturing, Tooling, Operations and others to bring groundbreaking concepts to life
Oversee the creation of detailed mechanical designs, 2D drawings, and BOMs, ensuring precision and accuracy in every detail
Utilize advanced simulation and analysis techniques to optimize designs for performance, reliability, and manufacturability
Work closely with our manufacturing partners to ensure our designs are realized with the highest level of craftsmanship and quality.
Expected work travel outside of USA is approximately 10-15% for vendor visits and build support
Identify and mitigate technical risks, ensuring the successful execution of our ambitious projects
Take on a Mentorship role and help grown Product Design talent within the broader PD team
Stay at the forefront of electromechanical design, exploring emerging technologies and trends to inform our future creations
Present compelling design concepts and technical details to internal stakeholders and external partners, inspiring excitement and confidence in our vision
Preferred Qualifications
Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering
Fluent in Siemens NX including advanced modeling and surfacing tools, statistical software (JMP), MacOS
Experience working through entire product cycle including shipping product experience and factory build support
Previous role as a hands-on mechanical lead of a mass production consumer electronics products
Minimum Qualifications
10+ years of experience in product design and development of electromechanical systems
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (or related field)
Strong analytical skills with regard to mechanical engineering theory
Experience working in technical project groups in a professional environment
Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and 2D creation (NX, SolidWorks, Creo)
Proficiency in performing tolerance analyses
Deep understanding of mechanical engineering principles, including statics, dynamics, heat transfer, and materials science
Experience with tolerance analysis and GD&T
Experience working with a variety of manufacturing processes (e.g., machining, injection molding, 3DP, casting)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills including emails, slide presentations and presenting technical concepts to multi-disciplinary teams
Experience working with external manufacturing vendors
