Senior Software QE Manager

Description

As a manager within Special Projects, you will be part of a team creating new and innovative experiences for human interaction with generative AI. Your team will be directly responsible for developing cutting-edge, production-grade experiences across a large variety of iOS apps and frameworks.

We work in a fast-paced, startup-like environment where you will be part of every stage of development. You'll often work cross-functionally with other software teams, user interface designers, product marketing, machine learning, and privacy engineers from concept phase to deployment.

We are seeking a strong leader who can partner with senior leadership and other teams to drive quality of features from product definition to release. The successful candidate will build and lead a highly talented, diverse quality engineering team of experienced and thoughtful engineers to enable industry leading customer experiences.

  • Build, mentor, and manage teams of high-performing quality engineers and managers. Create a culture of excellence, creativity, inclusivity, and continuous learning. Dedicate a good part of your time to foster talents, carve a path for each team member to grow and contribute to their full potential.

  • Provide strategic direction and technical leadership for qualifying new delightful experiences enabled by genAI. Lead team to creatively and efficiently handle significant iteration, complex and condensed schedules, and competing priorities.

  • Partner with and align cross-functional partners including ML evals, software simulation, human factors, and other SW quality teams on overall quality strategy to ensure end to end coverage.

  • Establish long-term quality direction, success criteria, tracking, and reporting across entire platform. Define release quality gates and ship criteria; communicate quality risks and go/no-go recommendations to leadership, across quality areas, not only quality areas owned by this team.

  • Build and scale the team's test automation infrastructure, establishing frameworks and tooling to support rapid iteration.

  • Present team's work to leadership, communicating roadmap status, technical direction, and advocating for resources.

  • Defend and empower your quality team, working to fix broken tools or processes and instilling a respectful, high-achieving team culture.

  • Dive deep into technical problems and guide the team through complex technical trade-offs.

  • Think creatively about how to leverage genAI tools to empower the quality team.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Familiarity with AI principles and Foundation Models.

    Familiarity with evaluating non-deterministic systems.

    Deep knowledge about Apple OS-level components.

    Proven record of gaining technical expertise on the job; demonstrated ability to learn new technologies independently.

    Minimum Qualifications

    6+ years experience leading software quality teams, both manual and automation. 2+ years managing managers.

    Track record demonstrating the ability to structure, build, and lead a diverse and strong organization, including mentoring QE managers and senior ICs.

    Passion for and prior experience qualifying outstanding customer focused user interfaces, starting from feature definition and through to the final stages obsessing over the details.

    Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with high emotional intelligence and the ability to influence across all levels - from executive partners to individual contributors - and build strong cross-functional relationships.

    Excellent organization, prioritization, and strategic planning skills. Ability to manage resources effectively, represent the team and remove hurdles to enable each team member to operate at the highest level of efficiency and productivity.

    Experience defining quality gates, ship criteria, and quality metrics frameworks. Strong analytical mindset with the ability to translate data into actionable tracking, reporting, and decisions.

    Track record of defining right-sized QE processes for ambiguous, early-stage work - and evolving them as products mature.

    Proven experience building iOS test automation infrastructure from the ground up - defining frameworks, tooling, scaling strategies, and making strategic trade-offs between manual and automation coverage.

    Strong commitment to embracing and leveraging AI tools in day-to-day tasks and across the product development lifecycle, ensuring AI-assisted work produces high quality outcomes.

    Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in computer science or a related field.

    Pay & Benefits

    At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $208,400 and $365,400, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

    Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple's Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
