Battery FEA Engineer

Apple's Battery Engineering team is seeking an experienced FEA Engineer to play a critical role in the design, qualification, and manufacturing of battery systems that power Apple's portable electronic devices. In this position, your models and simulations will directly inform design decisions for nearly every battery Apple ships, impacting reliability, safety, manufacturing processes, and performance across the product portfolio.

Description

In this role, your work will directly influence the design and performance of battery systems in products used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. You will be at the center of Apple's battery innovation engine, enabling faster development cycles, improved product safety and reliability, and breakthrough performance.

Responsibilities:

Develop high-fidelity finite element analyses to predict battery performance prior to physical prototyping

Deliver simulation insights that directly shape design decisions and qualification outcomes for shipping products

Validate model predictions against experimental data and iterate to improve model accuracy and reliability

Develop and implement advanced structural, mechanical, thermal, and electrochemical models at the forefront of battery simulation technology

Capture intricate design details, cell chemistry behavior, and load cases spanning multiple length and time scales

Build coupled multi-physics models that accurately represent the complex interactions within battery systems

Design and deploy automated, end-to-end workflows from geometry creation through validated results

Leverage agentic automation, surrogate modeling, reduced-order modeling, parameterized design of experiments (DOE), and job automation for rapid design exploration, calibration, and optimization

Scale simulation capabilities to support multiple concurrent product programs

Experimental Validation and Material Characterization

Design novel, non-standard test methods to calibrate material models and validate simulation predictions

Define instrumentation and measurement strategies that provide high-quality data for model validation

Preferred Qualifications

PhD and 10+ years relevant industry experience

Experience with coupled thermal-mechanical or electrochemical-mechanical modeling

Experience with LS-DYNA, ANSYS, or COMSOL

Exposure to physics-based machine learning methods for surrogate modeling or model order reduction

Custom solver development or user-defined material model implementation experience

Industry experience in battery mechanics, electrochemistry, or energy storage systems

Experience validating complex models against experimental data

Experience designing and executing physical tests for material characterization or model validation

Familiarity with high-performance computing (HPC) environments and version-controlled software development workflows

Minimum Qualifications

MS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computational Mechanics, Applied Mechanics, Materials Science, Applied Physics, or similar

Experience with commercial finite element analysis software such as Abaqus

Experience with advanced simulation techniques such as nonlinear constitutive modeling and modeling of high speed events and large deformations

Experience programming in Python

Experience building, debugging, and calibrating finite element models

Pay & Benefits

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $184,700 and $324,800, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs.
