We have an exciting opportunity to join our growing team! As a Welder at HII you will provide task support by being managing the machines that manufacture and repair metal structures, tools, and equiptment at the Newport News Shipyard!

What You Will Do

  • Interpret blueprints, drawings, and measurements to plan layouts.
  • Weld small and large components such as copper plumbing, beams, and pipelines.
  • Use specialized machinery for industrial welding and oversee machines that perform the same job.
  • Maintain and repair all machinery.
  • Assess welded surfaces, structures and components to identify errors.
  • Follow and enforce strict safety regulations such as wearing heat-resistant gloves, protective masks, and safety shoes.
  • Monitor machinery for appropriate usage and temperature.
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, and overhead positions.

What You Must Have
  • High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 6 years of related experience.
  • Prefer technical/professional certifications.
  • Must provide own hand tools as designated per trades specialty.
  • Must be experienced and able to obtain SMAW and GTAW welding certifications within designated time frame.
  • Must be able to pass a general and specific knowledge exam on welder workmanship.
  • Must be able to accurately fit-up and install components and foundations.
  • Must be able to read and interpret straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.
  • Must be able to interpret drawings and other weld specific documentation.
  • Ensures shop safety and housekeeping are followed.
  • Ensures all materials and equipment are properly and safely stored, protected, and maintained.
  • Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs.
  • Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator.
  • Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
