The Perfect Style Piece for Work and Play

It’s no secret that a functional wardrobe should be centered around pieces that play double, triple—heck, quadruple—duty. A leather jacket for instance: perfect with heels and your favorite boyfriend jeans for a night out, paired with a light and airy dress for brunch, or over a blazer and crisp button-down on the way to work.

But your “wear with everything and anything” pieces shouldn't be limited to that impeccably tailored blazer, pair of black pointy toed classic heels, and dark washed skinnies.

In fact, I think dresses are the best multitasking pieces a gal could own. Not only do they easily transition from the office to wherever you’re going next—be it dinner, a cocktail party, or happy hour with the co-workers—with a few simple tweaks, they work perfectly for concerts, weddings, or going out on the weekend, too.

Today, we’ve partnered with Tailour (one of the best companies I’ve found for professional dresses I actually want to wear on the weekend or after-work hours) to show you how a couple of great dresses can easily go from work to wow.

Work and Play in Grey

Whether you typically shy away from bright colors or just want a more subtle canvas for fun accessories, a simple grey dress is a perfect neutral pick. The nipped-in waist of this A-line style is flattering on anyone, and the subtly full skirt is modern and fun.

At Work

Put on those pointy pumps in a neutral color (I like classic black) and throw on your favorite tuxedo blazer and a delicate gold necklace or two. You’ll look instantly polished and sophisticated.

For the Weekend

Headed to a concert or out for drinks with the girls? Pair your dress with unexpected shoes—like my slightly beat-up Converse—a tough leather jacket, and a bold red or pink lip. The juxtaposition of the feminine silhouette with its more grungy counterparts makes it edgy and fun for after-hours.

Bold and Beautiful

A bold-colored dress in luxurious silk is perfect for making a statement and feeling confident both in and out of the boardroom. Tailour's royal blue is universally flattering—but don’t be afraid to try poppy red or emerald green, too!

At Work

For your 9-to-5, wear this bold beauty with ballet flats and a pretty statement necklace. The higher neckline makes fun accessories totally OK for work.

For the Weekend

Going to a wedding or having a nice dinner out with your main squeeze? The rich color makes this dress evening-ready. Throw on sky-high heels, pull back your hair in a chic, messy chignon, and add those huge earrings you’ve been dying to wear out.
