Muse Mutt Madness 2014: The Quest for the Best Office Dog
Work productivity is about to go down the drain in offices all over the world with March Madness starting up. But here at The Muse, if we're going to waste time at the office, it's going to be spent ogling adorable puppies.
Which is why we're so excited to announce our 2014 Quest to Find the Ultimate Office Dog. Check out our bracket featuring 32 of the most adorable dogs (and one cat) you'll ever see, then help us decide which of these canine co-workers should be crowned as the top dog.
Learn more about the pups (and their offices), and cast your first round votes below. (Voting closes Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at 6 PM ET.)
Matchup 1: Maggie May vs. Chloe
Maggie May From Tasting Table: 4-Year-Old Old English Bulldog
Maggie May is the most mellow of the Tasting Table bunch, and can often be found sprawled out underneath someone's desk acting as a real-life foot warmer. She's also the company's #1 taste-tester, making sure that all of TT's recipes are up to snuff before the team gives its final stamp of approval!
Chloe From emPOWERED: 10-Month-Old Mini French Bulldog
Chloe is known to brighten the mood wherever she goes. When she's not playing dress-up or practicing some of the fun tricks she knows, she can be found Instagramming up an adorable storm (@chloe_theminifrenchie).
Matchup 2: Sophie vs. Honey Pompom
Sophie From Twilio: 7-Year-Old Dachshund
As the active Twilio mascot, Sophie can be found circulating the office ensuring the highest quality of work is being executed. If anyone's performance is in question, she'll be quick to jump on a lap to discuss it. She also spends time examining the view from the top of each piece of furniture in the office, sprinting laps through the event space, and managing kitchen floor cleanup duty after lunchtime.
Honey Pompom From Voxy: 2-Year-Old Pomeranian
Often confused for a bunny or cat, Honey Pompom takes her job as Voxy's (fluffiest) office dog very seriously. On an average day, Honey can be found snoozing on the couch or sweeping the floors for rogue crumbs and snacks, which if found, she promptly gobbles up. Periodically, she reminds software engineer Nathan that it is time to take his hourly "pompom belly rub" break. While the rest of the team is hard at work changing the way the world learns English, Honey is there for a comforting snuggle reminding us that sometimes words aren't needed.
Matchup 3: Vern vs. Maven
Vern From Bitly: 2-Year-Old Mutt, Rescued From Puerto Rico
Vern, Bitly's Pawgress Manager, spends her working days making sure everyone drops food on the ground, gives her belly rubs, and knows when the mailman arrives. She revels in giving Chauncey the Pufferfish a run for his money as the official Bitly mascot. Very attached to her mom, the office manager, she's always underfoot (unless, of course, someone is eating in the kitchen).
Maven From TrackMaven: 13-Week-Old Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Maven has an odd affinity for marketers. He's the mascot of TrackMaven, a competitive intelligence platform for marketers. Other than digging up marketing data, he loves snow and splooting instead of walking.
Matchup 4: Bill Murray vs. Frankie
Bill Murray From StackSocial: Chiweenie (Half Chihuahua, Half Dachshund)
Bill Murray is a rising star in the Los Angeles startup community. He's currently the Director of Naps at StackSocial, but has his eye on the CNO (Chief Napping Officer) position. He's been a pioneer in finding new, exciting, and comfy areas to sleep. From anyone's lap to the couch, from the giant bean bag to odd places in the middle of the floor, he is dedicated to optimizing the snoozing experience. His other interests include chewing on toys, army crawling the entire length of the office, looking quite debonair in his little hoodie, and following his dad into meetings, offices, and bathrooms.
Frankie From HomeAway: 7-Year-Old Cocker Spaniel
"Oh, my job at HomeAway? I’m Chief Cuteness Officer. It came with a bow, but I might have eaten it." —Frankie
Matchup 5: Honey vs. Gumby
Honey From Bigcommerce: 11-Year-Old French Bulldog
Honey was adopted from a rescue six years ago. She just joined Bigcommerce's new San Francisco office, where so far her duties include lounging on the oversized bean bag chairs, saying hello via webcam to teammates in Austin and Sydney, stealing ping pong balls, reminding others to be polite and share their string cheese, and perfecting her Sad Keanu face. Why the Sad Keanu face? She's impatiently waiting for Bigcommerce to fill the office with about 40 awesome engineers and product managers. So while the team is interviewing and hiring the best talent in San Francisco, Honey is working on becoming a certified Reiki master.
Gumby From SHEfinds: 4-Year-Old Peekapoo
Gumby loves meetings. When he hears "time for meeting," he runs out of his crate and into the conference room. Usually with a bone. He gets very annoyed if there isn't a seat available at the table, in which case he has to sit on a lap. He hates food delivery guys, but adores UPS. In the late afternoon, he likes to visit everyone's purses under their desks to see if there are any leftover meats or cheeses. (Gumby's anti-carb.) He commutes daily and knows when he's at the 28th street stop. He summers at SHEfinds' beach house on the North Fork.
Matchup 6: Betty vs. Louie P.
Betty From Dormify: 7-Year-Old Toy Poodle
When Betty isn't cranking out social media campaigns and Dormifying the world, she's dreaming of long walks on the beach and strawberry daiquiris. Working part time as a model in DC, Betty enjoys testing out Dormify rugs and hanging out on bedding samples—product testing at its finest.
Louie P. From Chartbeat: 15-Month-Old Mini Goldendoodle
Louie Thursdays are a staple at Chartbeat. With a tail wag at the door and a "Good Morning!" that sounds a lot like "WOOF," Louie makes sure everyone gets their days started off right! When he's not making mischief, melting hearts, or lounging around in the Chartbeat Puppytorium, you can find him nerding out on his own startup, The Data for Dogs Project, with his co-founder and fellow Chartpup, Champ.
Matchup 7: Homer vs. Brando
Homer From Basis: 1-Year-Old American Labrador
Homer is the Chief Affection Officer for Basis, heading up Canine Resources. Homer ensures everyone on the Basis team gets an adequate dose of playfulness, stress relief, and 70 pounds of love and cuteness every day. With his Labrador sports edition physique, he motivates folks to chase after him when he's successfully gone dumpster diving for snacks. When he's not exercising, he seeks affection by sleeping on laps. Homer's always sought elected office, so please vote for him in this dog-election!
Brando From Sailthru: 7-Year-Old Wolf (Just Kidding, He's a Siberian Husky)
Brando currently works in Sailthru's Causing Trouble department. Morning is when he's most productive, and he can often be found greeting others by jumping on them and running circles around them. After letting out a howl and a burp, he then spends his afternoons napping on his teammates' feet.
Matchup 8: Frank vs. Gray Goose
Frank From Mashable: (Almost) 3-Year-Old Morkie
As Mashable's Chief Morale Officer, Frank has a packed schedule of sleeping, receiving belly rubs, and begging for office snacks.
Gray Goose From GlobalGiving: 6-Year-Old American Shorthair With Orange Mackerel Tabby Coloring (a.k.a., Mutt)
Gray Goose (or Goosey George, or just George for short) is Chief of Mischief at GlobalGiving. He may sleep for 90% of the day, but he's really committed to wow with that last 10%, making sure that all loose wires and dangling shoelaces are sufficiently scrambled. He's even been known to send his own emails by crossing the keyboard in an attempt to get a good scratch from a laptop. Voting for George means a vote for all the LOLcats in the GlobalGiving family.
Matchup 9: Otis vs. Rico Suavé
Otis From Livefyre: 7-Year-Old Terrier Mix
Otis is a proud SF pup who keeps the Livefyre office on its toes. A world traveler, treat lover, and black-belt cuddler, Otis loves to chases birds, planes, and menacing ceiling fans. He's a friend to everyone who plays fetch with him.
Rico Suavé Gelfo From Findr Group: 4-Year-Old Miniature Schnauzer
As Chief Canine Efficiency Officer, Rico brings with him great experience in human manipulation, exercise, and efficiency in cleanliness of work areas. While in the office, Rico ensures that no team member leaves papers, shoes, or other objects on the floor. When paper is found, his keen sense and love of parades drives him to shred paper in case of the urgent need for ticker tape.

Bella From J. Hilburn: 4-Year-Old Jack Russell Terrier
Meet J. Hilburn's fashion conscious pup! She resides in the company's Boston-area office and frequently sports the latest fashion (ties) or tests their durability (close call whether dogs slobber more or guys spill more on their ties!). She has kept all of J. Hilburn's employees warm in this never-ending winter!
Butters From The Muse: 4-Year-Old French Bulldog
Butters is The Muse's CCC (Chief Cat Chaser). He sleeps all day and is extremely passionate about food. He is constantly pitching article ideas to The Daily Muse editorial team, including, "How to Tell Your Co-worker to Stop Farting in the Office," "The 8-Hour Sleep-Work Day," "If You Wait Long Enough, Master Will Drop Food on The Floor," and "5 Fun Ways to Chase a Vacuum."
Matchup 11: Clementine vs. Toby
Clementine From SeatGeek: 18-Month-Old Miniature Long Haired Dachsund
Every morning at SeatGeek, team members stand up in a circle and go over what they'll be working on that day. Joining all two-legged members of the team is four-legged Coder-in-Chief, Clementine! Clementine is an office staple in SeatGeek's NYC headquarters, always eager to join in meetings and provide visitors' ankles with a warm (and wet) puppy smooch upon arrival. The only time Clementine isn't allowed to roam free is during SeatGeek's weekly team lunch—because no one can resist sharing bits of their meals with her under the table!
Tobias "Toby" Gunther From YPlan: 7-Month-Old Yorkie Poo Mix
Toby is quite the team player at YPlan. His exhausting days include greeting everyone at the door, allowing the neighboring companies to play with him, and being sure each member of the company gets his or her own special time. When he helps his mom work from home, he's eager to help with customer service calls by trying to steal the phone. This boy can't wait to see how his role continues progressing at YPlan.
Matchup 12: Darwin vs. Louis
Darwin From Yelp: 10-Year-Old Vizsla
Meet Darwin, Yelp's unofficial mascot. This lovable canine greets Yelpers every morning with a woof and wagging tail. When he's not perusing the Yelp trash bins or napping in the sun, he's learning how to code Python (with a little bit of Java on the side). Keep an eye out for him on the Yelp app and at Yelp.com!
Louis From Ironpaper: 8-Year-Old Wheaton Terrier
Louis spends his day “collaborating” with the various Ironpaper teammates and visitors to the agency alike. A big fan of a morning bagel, he can be found napping at various sun spots throughout the office. Of course, his favorite intern happens to be his brother, too.
Matchup 13: Charlie vs. Charlie
Charlie (Short for Charlemagne) From Contently: 4-Year-Old Cockapoo
Charlie is his name; stories are his game. It's a stretch to call the hard-drinking, fast-living Deputy Editor of Contently an office dog—he's usually found pawing around his favorite neighborhood watering holes, slurping up Bloody Marys, seducing sources, and chasing tail. You can find him wherever a rug is un-scoot upon, a deliveryman un-barked at, or an office couch requires a canine touch.
Charlie Chester Kim From Venture for America: Morkie
Charlie is an honorary Venture for America team member, providing moral support and ensuring the office is all smiles when he's here. If you're on a stressful call or in a long meeting, Charlie is there to hop your lap and make sure you stay calm and engaged. Charlie helps maintain a healthy office wellness culture and encourages Venture for America's fellows to practice a healthy work-life balance.
Matchup 14: Hobbes vs. Zaya
Hobbes From Handybook: (Almost) 2-Year-Old Havanese

Zaya From Cloudred: 7-Month-Old Beagle Mix
Zaya's days at Cloudred are filled with lots of meetings with her boss, Mac, Cloudred's Chief Morale Officer (CMO). Together, they nail down the best tug of war strategy and discuss various advantages of bouncy ball. After all this hard work, there's just enough time in the day left for a peanut butter snack and cozy nap in someone's lap.
Matchup 15: Goose vs. Oz
Goose From onefinestay: 2-Year-Old Sealyham Terrier
onefinestay expects that its team members are expert relationship-builders, so it comes as no surprise that Goose is one of the top dogs on the team. Having met over a thousand new hosts and pawed her way around London's mansions and mewses, she never fails to charm (unless you're a cat, squirrel, or anything that lives in a pond).
Oz From Atlassian: 6-Year-Old Alaskan Klee Kai
Oz loves the Atlassian office (his favorite chair is the big Atlassian bean bag in the lunch room). He has tons of admirers and gets lots of scratches and love every time he comes into the office; relaxing everyone while enjoying the attention. He's been to both of the team's offices in San Francisco and Sydney and has been welcomed in both places. He prefers the company of all the ladies in the office and is scared of tall developers with beards!
Matchup 16: Roxy vs. Lennie
Roxy From Zoosk: 4-Month-Old Short-Haired Havanese
Roxy joined Zoosk two months ago and has already made her mark all over the office. She has regular meetings with co-workers from each department and isn't shy about providing her input for the whole floor to hear. When she isn't cooped up in her office, Roxy enjoys licking her team members and a good belly rub.
Lennie From Umbel: 3-Year-Old Bulldog/Pitbull Mix
Lennie doesn't always work in the office, but when he does, he's looking sharp in his bow-tie. While in the office, he'll help out by serenading co-workers with piggy noises and loud snoring.
As Social Media and Community Manager, Brooke is intrigued by (okay, obsessed with) all things social. She has been Musing since right after she graduated from Smith College, beginning first as an intern. When Brooke isn’t conjuring up new Tweets, she can be found trying out new foods, wishing she had a Boston Terrier, and Instagramming. Say hi on Twitter @beetorr.More from this Author
