How to Change the World From Your Desk: Start Small

When he was starting out in the entertainment industry, Ryan Kahn didn’t expect to be a nationally-recognized Career Coach, Founder of The Hired Group, and Star of MTV's "Hired.” But you’ve got to start somewhere.

Ryan’s advice for getting your start? Say “yes” to everything, even if at the time it seems small.

A few years ago,a friend of a friend approached him to speak to his students on “How to Break into Your Dream Career,” and Ryan said “yes.”

This small step, seemingly inconsequential step led to more and more speaking gigs. And while the speaking opportunities grew, he also said “yes” to any student who contacted him for advice or help in their career. As time went on, Ryan found a passion for helping others in their careers and transitioned from the entertainment to his dream career as a Career Coach.

Ryan was then contacted by a television producer with an idea for a show about helping people land their dream jobs. Even though the idea was just two paragraphs he’d received over email, he responded with an enthusiastic “yes.” That two paragraph idea went on to become a two-minute demo video, and was then picked up by MTV as a 20-episode television series.

So it’s safe to say that the small step Ryan took in a friend’s classroom led to a new career opportunity that opened the door for a TV show, national speaking tours, writing books, and most importantly helping thousands of people land their dream jobs.
