How I Found the Perfect Job—at a Company I Had Never Heard of Before

Our mission here at The Muse is simple: to help you find your dream job. And there’s nothing we love more than hearing about it when you do!

Today we chatted with Megan Glynn, who, after working for large retail companies for over a decade, decided she wanted to find an opportunity with a smaller business. She now works as the Director of Customer Acquisition and Growth Marketing at Knot Standard, creating and executing strategic marketing campaigns that will support and promote the brand.

Read below to learn more about Glynn’s story, then check out Knot Standard’s offices and see how you can land a great new gig of your own.

What were you doing before you landed your new job?

For 10 years, I worked for Macy’s—I started in the men’s department and ended up in wedding and gift registry, where I was in charge of marketing and events (and got to work at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!). After Macy’s, I helped lead the effort to market new store openings for Saks OFF 5th.

What were you looking for in a job?

After several years in the retail industry, I knew it was the right field for me. But I decided that, instead of continuing to work for large retailers, I wanted to work for a startup or smaller business, as I felt this would provide me the opportunity to make a direct impact on a daily basis. I was also looking for a company with a great culture, because being at work is so much better when you are around great people.

What attracted you to Knot Standard when you found it on The Muse?

Knot Standard was the company that I was waiting for—and I didn’t even know it! It has a unique and amazing product, and the job description tapped into all the things I wish I could have done more of in past jobs.

What’s your favorite part so far about working at this company?

Not only is the team extremely smart, but everyone truly loves what they do. Everyone who I’ve connected with so far wants to do a great job and is very proud of the business. It’s really exciting to see a group of people all on the same page and want others to excel.
Also, it’s so great to see the guys in fresh suits daily!

What’s something most people would find surprising about working at Knot Standard?

We just moved into a new showroom and it was all hands on deck from all levels—every person rolled up his or her sleeves and to really built this showroom to be the beautiful place it is today! It’s very cool to know you had a literal hand in making this place what it is.

Is there anything from The Muse that helped you out in your job hunt?

When I used other sites for my job search, I couldn’t find openings that were applicable to my level of experience. With The Muse, it was different. I was able to find the right types of jobs because I was able to sort by experience level.

In addition, being able to see a snapshot of the offices and the employees who work there made the whole process feel more inviting.

Is there anything in particular you did during your application process that you think helped you stand out and land the job?

I made sure that in my resume I had key words that were tailored to the job based on my experience from the job description I was applying for—so when reading it it was easy to scan that I had the relevant experience. Also, I made sure my cover letter wasn’t generic—I wanted my personality and experience to shine so they could see how I’d be perfect for the role!

What advice would you have for someone who wants a job like yours or who is stuck in a difficult job hunt right now?

Don’t limit yourself to staying in one lane, and be really honest with yourself about what you want to get out of your next opportunity. Be able to determine which aspects you’re willing to compromise on and which are necessary for you to grow and develop.

Most of your day is spent doing a job, so you should love it. Finding the right job for you may not happen overnight, so it’s also key to have patience while you are job searching.
