Today, we caught up with Howard Young, who recently joined advertising and technology company Cardlytics as a Database Test Engineer. His role? Using his engineering knowledge to help use purchase data to make all advertising better.
What were you looking for in a job?
In the process of seeking my next career opportunity, I was most concerned about finding the right environment to further develop my software skills, not only for testing, but for development and programming. With an engineering background and experience in software testing, I knew that automation and database testing would heavily increase and diversify my skill set.
Additionally, everyone wants to make sure that their co-workers are friendly and easy to work with, so this by default was also a priority. After having the interviews, it was quite apparent that at Cardlytics I would be working with a group of people who worked hard, but played just as hard.
What stuck out to you about the company when you found it on The Muse?
What is most appealing to me about Cardlytics is, in fact, the work we do. As someone who has recently entered the app development community and hopes to one day start my own business, I understand the importance of data and analytics.
If we look at Google, Facebook, and the apps and different devices and platforms that allow us to access and enjoy social media, it can be said that one common factor is that the most important thing is data! More data means more accuracy. More accuracy means more efficiency. And more efficiency for a business usually means maximum revenue.
This is what is so special about this company. We do what other companies do with big data, the only difference is that our data is more reliable than most, and no company seeking big data works as close with financial institutions as we do! I believe in Cardlytics and Card Linked Marketing and the future goal of the company.
What’s something most people would find surprising about working at Cardlytics?
What’s most surprising about this company is the fact that it doesn’t feel like a startup. Cardlytics was founded in 2008 but is already a top tech company in Atlanta and is listed as #25 in Deloitte’s 2015 Technology Fast 500.
Cardlytics understands the importance of treating the employees very well, which (in my opinion) is a direct reflection of how well the company performs. I honestly get excited about going to work every morning.
What’s your favorite part so far about working at Cardlytics?
So far there are several things that I love about being part of the Cardlytics family. My co-workers, including my supervisor, are nice, smart, and fun to work with. On a macro level, the company encourages us to socialize and bond. For the new Star Wars movie, Cardlytics execs reserved an entire theatre for all of the employees to go during work hours and see the film.
The only issue one might have is that you will have to be on guard to avoid being shot with a NERF gun. My boss hit me with a headshot my first week—talk about hazing!
What advice would you have for someone who wanted a job like yours?
I would say personality and ability to keep a positive attitude are key for Cardlytics and most great companies in general. It’s one thing to be good at what you do, but if you are friendly, fun, and enthusiastic about what you do, the hiring manager will be confident that you will contribute to a healthy learning environment.
Of course, a great personality alone will not get you the job, so work hard and be very prepared for the interview. It’s worth it!
Lastly, do your research. If you were going to buy a used car, you would expect to see a CARFAX report; you wouldn’t just take the person’s word that the car is good. The same should go for any big investment, and your career is the biggest investment you can make. Do your research on the company and make sure it’s a place you will enjoy working. Similarly, make sure the company knows you are the right candidate by being prepared, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic!
