Job Description

Massachusetts Veterans Home (MVH) at Chelsea is currently seeking an Environmental Services Supervisor (Environmental Service Spec IV) to coordinate duties on units to ensure effective operations and compliance with established standards, ensuring clean and orderly conditions throughout the facility as well as the campus grounds.

This role provides supervision and /or performs miscellaneous and routine tasks in order to maintain the cleanliness, appearance, and sanitation throughout the facility. In addition, performs other departmental job-related duties as required.

Detailed statement of duties and responsibilities:

  • Prepare reports and maintain records to provide information concerning assigned unit activities.
  • Coordinate, supervise and perform outside duties such as washing windows, picking up trash, etc.
  • Timely response to communications
  • Determine the need for and recommend the purchase of maintenance and custodial equipment.
  • Ensure buildings are clean and in orderly condition by performing a combination of activities including cleaning assigned areas and making minor repairs to buildings using hand tools.
  • Perform pest control duties and operates with and under an Integrated Pest Management Program (I.P.M).
  • Clean interior surfaces such as walls, ceiling, ceiling fans, fans, windows, furniture, shower chairs, shower trolleys, walkers, vents, etc. by dusting, polishing and washing using appropriate supplies and equipment.
  • Clean toilets, lavatories, utility rooms, laundry rooms, patient rooms, dining rooms, elevators, offices, conference rooms, janitor closets, storage closets, etc. using appropriate supplies and equipment.
  • Empty, clean and reline waste receptacles and transport waste to approved storage areas.
  • Empty recycle bins and transport recyclables to storage areas.
  • Capable of performing duties of Environmental Service Specialists I, II, and III.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of contracted pest control services to determine compliance with contractual requirements.
  • Maintain grounds and buildings by cutting grass, raking leaves, weeding and thinning flower beds or gardens etc.
  • Perform related duties such as loading or unloading equipment and supplies from vehicles, setting up furniture in rooms for special functions or meetings, assembling furniture such as beds, desks and cabinets
  • Strip, refinish and buff floors
  • Shampoo carpets and furniture
  • Load/unload; receive/distribute goods/supplies throughout facility
  • Snow removal
  • Perform pest management and control functions to include but not limited to; heat treatment of resident personal belonging upon admittance to control and kill bed bugs and document results. Accompanying the contract pest control company representative during his/her treatment rounds in the dorm area and remain with him/her during the entire treatment process. Place glue boards down for monitoring and pest control activities. Retrieve and remove dead rodents/insects from pest control monitoring glue boards and/or mechanical traps. Inspect dorm rooms for pest control activities to include insects/rodents and bedbugs. Schedule and accompany the contract pest control company representative for and during bedbug room inspections. Respond to and investigate any pest control complaints from staff or residents and document action taken and correct the situation. Provide oversight and training regarding pest control activities to staff and residents. Document pest control corrective action through the CAMIS system. Other related pest control duties as assigned.

The Environmental Services Specialist Series became final as of May 9, 2025; please note that the job specifications, including roles, responsibilities, and qualifications, are subject to change based on contract provisions or future updates to the series.

Qualifications required at hire:

  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures, rules, regulations etc. governing assigned unit activities.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of supervision.
  • Ability to coordinate the efforts of others in accomplishing assigned work activities.
  • Ability to supervise including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job.
  • Ability to give oral and written instructions in a precise and understandable manner.
  • Ability to maintain written records.
  • Ability to control work through periodic reviews and or evaluations
  • Ability to determine training needs of subordinates
  • Ability to provide training to subordinates.
  • Ability to determine the need for disciplinary action and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action

Qualifications acquired on job:

  • Working knowledge of proper pest control protocols within the first 6 months of hire and demonstrate knowledge retention of the same.
  • Attend appropriate supervisory training through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts MAS SP program within 12 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures, rules and regulations governing assigned unit activities.
  • Knowledge of the methods followed in building custodial work
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of materials, tools and equipment used in building custodial work.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in building custodial work.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of small hand tools used in building custodial work such as pliers, hammers wrenches etc.
  • Knowledge of record keeping procedures
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of supervision

Working Conditions: Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time, lift, and carry heavy objects, work indoors or outdoors in all types of weather, work under exposure to hazards.

Emergency Personnel: This position has been deemed as an Emergency Personnel Position. During a declared State of Emergency and in non-emergency situations/adverse weather, it will be necessary to report to work.

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in building custodial or institution housekeeping work, and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity.
