Research Scientist Intern, AR Displays & Sensing (PhD)

As a PhD intern, you will focus on on-chip laser beam scanning for advanced display and coherent sensing applications, and contribute to digital signal processing (DSP) algorithm development. You will collaborate with experts in photonics, MEMS, and laser systems to prototype and validate new concepts that push the boundaries of AR/VR and sensing platforms.Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty-four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

Research Scientist Intern, AR Displays & Sensing (PhD) Responsibilities:

  • Design, simulate, and prototype on-chip laser beam scanning systems for display and coherent sensing.
  • Develop and implement DSP algorithms for signal acquisition, processing, and system optimization.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including photonics, MEMS, and laser engineers.
  • Communicate research plans, progress, and results to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Publish research results and contribute to technology transfer for product development. Explore and apply advanced concepts in photonics, MEMS, and semiconductor lasers (DBR, DFB, VCSEL, etc.).
  • Conduct system-level prototyping and experimental validation of new optical architectures.

  • Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optical Science, Photonics, or a related technical field
  • 2+ years of experience in at least one of the following areas of optical research: photonic device design, MEMS systems, laser physics, and optical system prototyping. Experience with DSP algorithm development and implementation (e.g., MATLAB, Python, C/C++)
  • Familiarity with semiconductor laser technologies (DBR, DFB, VCSEL, etc.) and MEMS-based optical systems
  • Hands-on experience with optical simulation/design tools (e.g., Lumerical, COMSOL, Zemax, or similar)
  • Intent to return to degree program after internship
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams
  • Track record of publications, patents, or significant research contributions in photonics, MEMS, or laser systems
  • Experience with system-level prototyping, including integration of photonic and MEMS components
  • Familiarity with coherent sensing techniques and display technologies
