Job Summary:

To provide veterinary health care for laboratory animals, give advice regarding the care and maintenance of laboratory animals, and provide training for technicians. To monitor animal health and welfare in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and help maintain facilities for AAALAC accreditation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide laboratory animal medical care by examination, treatment and advice to ensure adequate and humane veterinary support.
  • Assist supervisor to ensure that company policies and practices regarding animal care and welfare are in compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Provide training in common veterinary procedures encountered in general practice to veterinary technicians and veterinarians at earlier stage of their career.
  • Serve on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, as needed. Conduct veterinary reviews of IACUC study protocols as necessary with supervisor assistance for complex protocols.
  • Address most frequently encountered non-complex clinical cases under the guidance from supervisor.
  • Assist with management of customer concerns that do not present a high degree of complexity during conference calls and/or visits to animal welfare/veterinary care.
  • Insure health status of animals by examination prior to placement on study.
  • Performs physical examinations, other veterinary related examination of animals as indicated in protocols and SOP.
  • Performs ophthalmic examinations on animals.
  • Report all animal care concerns and become involved in the resolution and appropriate corrective action, when necessary with assistance from supervisor for complex challenges.
  • Performs vendor site visit, as assigned, and prepare the report with guidance from manager.
  • Lead local projects and non-complex cases independently.
  • Develops capability or skills related to client-requested veterinary procedures
  • Mentors veterinary technicians, veterinarians at earlier stage of career and animal operations staff.
  • Learn to provide scientific and expertise on animal health, biology, physiology, and research methodology to staff scientists and technicians.

Travel Requirements: Yes

Travel, as needed, for continuing education and vendor site visits.

Education/Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor or Master in veterinary medicine and Chinese veterinary certificate, or equivalent in APAC

Experience:

Required:

  • At least 4 (post-graduation) year experience in laboratory animal medicine.
  • Knowledge on the care and use of small and large animals used in drug research and testing
  • Must be able to work in a laboratory setting with laboratory animals.
  • Good command of English

Working Conditions:

  • Mandatory immunizations and screening as required.
  • May be in contact with potentially hazardous substances.
  • Work may require wearing protective clothing, visors or respirator for long periods.

Special factors:

  • Overtime and weekend work as required.
