Master thesis: Grid Code Compliance Assessment of Large Data Centers: Identification of Interconnection Risks and Mitigation Measures

Yesterday Stockholm, Sweden

The Opportunity:

At Hitachi Energy our purpose is advancing a sustainable energy future for all. We bring power to our homes, schools, hospitals and factories. Join us and work with fantastic people, while learning and developing yourself on projects that have a real impact on our communities and society. Bring your passion, bring your energy, and be part of a global team that appreciates a simple truth: Diversity + Collaboration = Great Innovation.

Investigate European and Nordic grid code requirements for large-scale data center connections, focusing on compliance risks related to voltage and frequency stability, voltage ride-through (VRT), power quality, load ramping, and control interactions. The project includes grid code review, power system modelling, and dynamic simulation studies using PSCAD and PowerFactory/PSS®E to assess compliance risks and evaluate mitigation solutions such as BESS, STATCOMs, synchronous condensers, and advanced control systems. The objective is to identify effective strategies for secure and compliant integration of future hyperscale and AI-driven data centers into transmission networks.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Review European and Nordic grid codes relevant to large data center interconnections.
  • Identify key technical risks associated with grid code non-compliance, including voltage ride-through, voltage and frequency stability, interaction phenomena, power quality, and load ramping requirements.
  • Develop representative data center and power system models in PSCAD and PowerFactory/PSS®E.
  • Perform dynamic simulation studies to evaluate data center performance during grid disturbances and fault conditions.
  • Assess compliance with selected European and Nordic grid code requirements.
  • Evaluate mitigation measures such as Grid-Forming BESS, STATCOMs, MV UPS systems, and harmonic filtering solutions.
  • Compare the technical effectiveness, advantages, and limitations of different mitigation measures.
  • Develop recommendations and best practices for the compliant integration of future AI and hyperscale large-scale data centers into power systems.
  • Live Hitachi Energy's core values of safety and integrity by taking responsibility for your actions while caring for your colleagues and the business.
