We are looking for a talented Electronic Systems Controls Senior Engineer to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Cummins' business in Columbus, IN.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

Enhance System Performance

By assisting in the development of electronic controls and diagnostics, you'll help optimize performance for engines, power systems, and powertrains, ensuring reliability and efficiency.

Drive Problem Resolution

You'll own investigations and troubleshooting for complex control systems, reducing downtime and improving product quality through effective documentation and solutions.

Apply Advanced Engineering Principles

Using strong knowledge of control theory and first principles, you'll guide decision-making that directly impacts system functionality and customer satisfaction.

Improve Development Processes

Your support in refining processes like modeling, simulation, calibration, and DVP&R will lead to more efficient workflows and higher-quality deliverables.

Translate Customer Needs into Solutions

By converting customer requirements into functional algorithms and validating them, you'll ensure products meet real-world demands and exceed expectations.

Collaborate Across Teams

Working with cross-functional teams, you'll foster alignment and integration between hardware, software, and system-level designs, improving overall product performance.

Advance Diagnostic Capabilities

Designing and tuning diagnostic algorithms will enhance fault detection and system reliability, reducing maintenance costs and improving user experience.

Contribute to Continuous Improvement

Through independent execution and engagement in process enhancements, you'll help evolve tools and systems that shape the future of electronic controls development.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

Strong Technical Foundation in Controls and Mechatronics

You'll need deep knowledge of open/closed loop control systems, mechatronics hardware integration, and system optimization to design and implement reliable electronic controls.

Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills

Proficiency in statistical methods, modeling, simulation, and failure mode avoidance is essential for making data-driven decisions, troubleshooting issues, and improving product reliability.

Systems Thinking and Requirements Management

The ability to translate customer needs into verifiable system requirements, manage validation plans, and assess impacts of changes will ensure alignment between design and performance goals.

Effective Collaboration and Communication

Success depends on working cross-functionally, documenting technical findings clearly, and influencing decisions while valuing diverse perspectives to drive results and continuous improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required. Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles. Master's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical or Controls Engineering.
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
  • Entry level/Early career professional. Preferred candidates would have relevant experience working in either a temporary student employment environment (intern, co-op, or other extracurricular team activities) or as an early career professional in a relevant technical discipline area.
  • Knowledge of MS Office tools is also preferred.
  • Prior experience in MATLAB data analysis and GT-POWER engine simulations
  • Prior Engineer or Senior Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area
  • Demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making.

Additional Details:

  • Calibrating air handling controller, virtual sensors and device drivers for automotive and off-highway diesel/spark ignition engine programs. Validation of the calibration, documentation of results and supporting certification process.
  • Supporting engine development by collecting data from engines, investigating/troubleshooting issues in test cells, trucks, and field test units by following the 7-step problem solving process. Providing technical support for hardware & software improvements based on the needed capability to meet requirements.
  • Performing GT-POWER/MATLAB engine simulations for development tasks. Supporting AUTOSAR software and calibration development for diesel and spark ignition engines.
  • Providing technical support in technical deep dives, and design reviews to communicate engine features/diagnostics performance to cross-functional teams. Documentation of results against technical profile requirements.
  • Supporting continual improvement of tuning and validation processes. Providing technical support in technical deep dives and design reviews to communicate engine features/diagnostics performance to cross-functional teams. Documentation of results against technical profile requirements.
  • Providing coaching/guidance to junior engineers, team members and cross-functional teams.
