Position Overview

This position supports the maintenance team by performing basic mechanical tasks while learning to inspect, service, diagnose and repair company vehicles and heavy equipment, such as trucks, trailers, batch plants, paving machines, bulldozers, engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and other equipment by performing the following duties. This position works under close supervision and is designed to help the apprentice gain hands‑on experience, technical knowledge, and practical skills needed to progress toward becoming a fully qualified mechanic.

Wage Range: $21 - $24 per hour

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Assists mechanics in troubleshooting equipment issues and learns to identify mechanical problems.
  • Helps dismantle equipment and components using hoists, hand tools and proper safety procedures.
  • Support maintenance and repair activities on heavy equipment, trucks, shop tools, and non-mobile equipment.
  • Performs basic service tasks such as oil changes, greasing, adding fluids, changing filters, and maintaining preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Learn and assist in troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems, hydraulic systems, diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, drive trains, etc.
  • Assists in adjusting functional parts of devices and control instruments.
  • Help repair or replace defective parts following proper procedures and safety standards.
  • Assist with installation of special functional and structural parts in devices.
  • Support equipment testing by helping start and monitor machines after repairs to very performance.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work area and follows all housekeeping and safety guidelines.
  • Learn and assist with basic welding activities as trained and permitted.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support mechanics and develop technical competency.


Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience
  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Mechanical aptitude and interest in pursuing a mechanical career required.
  • Previous experience in equipment service, shop work, or related fields preferred but not required.


Work Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Report to the shop dressed appropriately and ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work independently within a team environment and assist the team with other duties as required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends, when necessary.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and productions areas as stated by OSHA.


Knowledge/Skill Requirements
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team in a fast-paced and complex environment.
  • Ability to work in a safety sensitive construction setting, including exposure to moving machinery and heavy equipment.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should be to work in constant exposure to the outside elements, in all weather conditions.
