Director of Architecture - Tech Standards

The Director of Architecture will lead a team of Enterprise Architects and technical experts tasked with defining the enterprise architecture, architectural framework and standards across Booking.com.

The Director of Architecture will not only lead the charge in crafting and applying our architectural frameworks and standards but also play a pivotal role in the evolution of our Tech Guiding Principles. Their leadership will bridge technical excellence with strategic foresight, ensuring that our architectural endeavors meet current needs and anticipate the future technology landscape. In collaboration with the business unit teams, they will drive the creation of scalable, innovative solutions that power our vision for the Connected Trip, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement. The role is crucial in mentoring and guiding our community of architects and technical experts, inspiring them to embrace and contribute to our guiding principles and technological ambitions.

Strong communication, stakeholder management, and leadership abilities enable the Director to guide teams towards common goals while championing customer-centricity, diversity, and inclusion across Booking.com.

Responsibilities:
  • Creating Cross-BU Architectural Standards and Reusable Artifacts: Developing unified standards and artifacts that can be used across different business units.
  • Developing and Maintaining Enterprise Architecture: Including business, data, application, and technology architectures.
  • Developing a High-Level Architecture Blueprint: Crafting an overarching blueprint that outlines the structure of the system.
  • Identifying new capabilities: working with strategy and product orgs to identify new capabilities and where they fit in the enterprise architecture.
  • Community Building: bringing the architecture community together by creating forums and events aimed at aligning architectural practices and fostering a culture of open exchange and collective growth across Booking.com. Partner with business stakeholders including HR on topics that span across the engineering community.
  • Establishing Governance Processes: Ensuring compliance with architectural standards across Booking.com.
  • Technical Leadership of the Tech Guiding Principles: Overseeing the application of and adherence to these principles.
  • Partnering with Solutions Architecture Teams: Aligning architecture with business goals and objectives within BUs.
  • Establishing Metrics and KPIs: Measuring the performance and impact of the enterprise architecture.
  • Establishing and Managing our Tech Radar: Keeping track of emerging technologies and trends.
Ideal Experience & Skills:
  • Significant knowledge and experience in Software, Solution and Enterprise architecture, while being able to perform at and engage with (Sr) Director/(S)VP level stakeholders
  • Experience operating large, Internet scale applications and distributed systems spanning multiple languages, platforms, front and back end services, networks and public cloud platforms.
  • Ability to communicate and sell the technology strategy and vision across the business
  • Deep business acumen and technical expertise
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and thought partnership across engineering and product
  • Experience of building, leading and inspiring teams of senior technical experts setting clear expectations and giving ownership
  • Highly proficient in domain based technology strategies and in platform architecture patterns
  • Strong understanding of digital technology space including mobile, web and distribution stacks
  • Strong understanding of cloud technologies and emerging technologies including AI
  • Strong understanding of NFRs and building resilience
  • Ability to lead and coach others in modeling solution architectures
  • Ability to lead and influence others without authority
