About the Role

Applied Material's Computing Delivery Engineering team owns an end-to-end computing platform for semiconductor manufacturing. Each environment is accompanied by a dedicated mini data center ranging from 3 to 30 hosts, that must be provisioned and configured from bare metal to fully operational state. These systems, which include compute hosts, VMs, containers, network elements, storage, and firewalls, that run fully air-gapped at the customer fab, with no internet, no cloud, and zero tolerance for downtime.

We are looking for a Senior Computing Infrastructure Engineer to take direct technical ownership of this platform end-to-end: design it, build it as code, qualify it, harden it, and stand behind it as the highest technical escalation (Tier 4). This is not classic IT and it is not a cloud role, every percent of performance and every minute of uptime translates into real money for our customers' fabs. You will work shoulder-to-shoulder with software architects to turn next-generation product visions into reproducible, production-grade computing systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design & Development of Computing Platforms (60%)
  • Design and develop end-to-end computing platforms for new inspection products, translate software architects' requirements into concrete designs covering compute, storage, network, firewall, OS, virtualization, and containers.
  • Build and own the infrastructure-as-Code stack (Ansible, Bash, Python) that provisions and configures Linux platforms, from bare metal to fully operational state, repeatably and idempotently.
  • Drive performance optimization across compute, I/O, storage, and network for data-intensive inspection workloads where every percent matters.
  • Produce detailed High-Level Designs and operational documentation that allow the manufacturing organization to reproduce the system identically across every machine that leaves the factory.
  • Test & Validation (20%)
  • Design and execute full test plans that cover every layer of the stack. Host, hypervisor, storage, network, firewall, container/K8s, and every scenario the system may face in the field.
  • Define readiness criteria and validation gates before a platform is released to manufacturing or deployed to a customer fab.
  • Build automation that proves configurations are correctly and consistently applied across fleets of hosts.
  • Tier-4 Operations & Hardening (20%)
  • Act as Tier-4 the highest technical escalation for production inspection systems running at customer fabs in fully air-gapped environments. We follow a strict you build it, you run it DevOps culture: the same engineers who design the system stand behind it.
  • Drive root-cause analysis across the full stack (network ↔ firewall ↔ hypervisor ↔ storage ↔ OS ↔ application) and feed lessons back into design and automation.
  • Continuously harden the platform for security, reliability, and supportability under air-gapped constraints (no cloud, on-site-only support).
  • Maintain and evolve the PDC R&D labs that mirror production for development and qualification.

Required Skills & Knowledge

Over 5 years of hands-on experience in on-premise infrastructure engineering, with proven production-grade expertise across the following domains:

  • Production administration of Linux servers (Ubuntu / RHEL family).
  • Package management, systemd services, user/permission management, NFS shares.
  • Filesystem hierarchy, networking stack, and security model (sudo, SELinux/AppArmor, firewalls/nftables).
  • Hands-on with VMware, Hyper-V, or Proxmox: VM lifecycle, networking, and resource allocation.
  • SAN / NAS hands-on (iSCSI, NFS), distributed storage, RAID or equivalent volume management.
  • Configuration of managed switches: VLANs, trunking / link aggregation.
  • L2/L3 troubleshooting: comfort using Wireshark to analyze real traffic.
  • Writing and managing firewall rules: hands-on with appliance-based firewalls.
  • Building and managing container images (Docker / Podman): deploying containerized applications in production.
  • Operating Kubernetes clusters (self-managed or managed): writing and applying Deployments, Services, ConfigMaps.
  • Strong Ansible plus Bash and/or Python - used as primary tools, not occasional scripts.
  • Disciplined Infrastructure-as-Code mindset: version-controlled, reviewable, idempotent.
  • B.Sc. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent technical discipline.
  • Fluent English written and verbal for daily collaboration with the Bangalore team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing or operating systems in air-gapped or fully offline environments.
  • Background in semiconductor equipment, industrial automation, embedded, or other hardware-coupled software environments.
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines for on-premise systems (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps).
  • Familiarity with on-premise observability stacks - Grafana, Prometheus, ELK, iperf.
  • Comfort using AI agents as part of the daily engineering workflow - we are heavy users.
  • Active Directory and selective Windows administration alongside Linux.

Why Join Us?

  • Real ownership, end-to-end. You design the platform, you build it as code, you qualify it, and you stand behind it in production. No throwing things over the wall.
  • Engineering that matters. The systems you build run inside Intel, Samsung, and TSMC fabs every percent of performance and every minute of uptime translates into millions of dollars for the customer.
  • Hard problems, not IT. Air-gapped environments, billion-transistor-era data volumes, custom inspection workloads the easy answers from the cloud world don't apply here, and that's the fun.
  • Modern, broad stack. Linux, virtualization, containers and Kubernetes, distributed storage, networking and firewalls, IaC with Ansible/Python and we are heavy users of AI agents in our daily work.
  • A growth path from systems to development. If you're a strong on-premise engineer who wants to grow into a development-oriented infrastructure role, this team is built for that transition.
  • International collaboration. You will work day-to-day with global peers on a shared product, not in a silo.
  • Stability with scale. Applied Materials 58+ years old, ~35,000 employees in 20 countries combined with the pace of an R&D group shipping next-generation products.
