Emotional Intelligence Matters Just as Much as IQ—So, How Do You Measure Up?
“I can tell you feel really guilty about that,” my friend Lindsey commented. “You wouldn’t make eye contact with me that whole time.”
I’d just wrapped up a story about an email that had gone horribly wrong. It was supposed to be a funny, light-hearted story—but I realized Lindsey was right. I did still feel guilty about the whole debacle.
Lindsey has amazing people skills. (Check out what else I’ve learned from her.) In fact, she has what internationally known psychologist Daniel Goleman calls high “emotional intelligence.” Unlike IQ, you can’t exactly sum up EQ in a single number. Instead, you can judge your EQ by looking at four different competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management.
