Zendesk is seeking an Engineering Manager to join The Foundation Analytics team. The team is responsible for implementing data pipelines, a data lake, and a data warehouse for the Zendesk Data Platform (ZDP). ZDP enables Zendesk to gain a single view of data, drive data-driven decision making, surface insights internally and to our customers and improve operational efficiencies.
As an Engineering Manager at Zendesk, you will apply both your leadership and your technical expertise to guide and enable a team of passionate engineers. Youll provide coaching and mentorship for a team with a focused mission.
Your team will plan, build and ship features that may be software written by the team, or may include implementing solutions using open source frameworks like Apache Spark/Flink/Hudi. Depending on the solution, you may deploy your services into our Kubernetes clusters, or may run standalone clusters using AWS EMR or something similar.
You will work with tech leads to ensure they make good architectural decisions, balanced by the reality of Zendesk business strategy. As a leader, youll ensure that teams are shipping architecturally sound software at a regular cadence. You will make sure teams are having an open and productive retrospective on a regular basis and taking action to ensure their process evolves and continuously improves.
Data is at the heart of Zendesks business! This is an autonomous role that can have a huge impact across all of the Zendesk product family!

- Collaborate with the Product team to clarify, refine, and communicate product priorities.
- Contribute to discussions on the technical roadmap by advocating for scalability, reliability, and efficiency for the team.

- Own the recruitment of new team members and facilitate a speedy engaged interview process.
- Run the daily scrum team meetings, maintain the backlog of prioritized tasks, and plan the roadmap for work for the year ahead.
- Provide regular feedback to people you lead in a caring and direct way.
- Participate in designing and developing key features and functionality of our data platform
- Investigate production issues and fine-tune our data pipelines
- Continually improve data pipelines for high efficiency, throughput and quality of data
What you bring to the role
Basic Qualifications:
- A few years of experience leading people across one or more teams.
- Knowledge of building and shipping software at scale together with a team.
- Sound understanding of data engineering and agile development practices.
- Flexibility and passion to cultivate change in your team.
- The ability to be direct and seek issues head-on when needed, without being uncaring.
- Mindfulness and an ability to stay calm when others get flustered.
- Phenomenal communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Refined prioritization skills, to focus your time and energy on where itll have the most impact.

- Proven working understanding in Data Engineering.
- Proven track record with cloud and data related technologies.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience writing ETL jobs to help address various data engineering challenges
- Strong understanding of build and deployment tools
- Familiarity with Kafka, Flink, Spark frameworks with validated understanding of at least one job scheduling tool: Airflow, Celery, AWS Step functions

- Our data pipelines are written in Java and Python based software stacks
- We use many open source technologies, including: Spark, Flink, Hudi, Airflow
- Our software runs on AWS services like EMR and in Kubernetes, and integrates with AWS services S3, Athena, and Glue for data access
